So here's another new illness. Dutch Josh commented on it in another thread, but I thought it deserved a thread of it's own. My first question is why did 3 children eat a dead bat? |

There's nothing more dangerous than a resourceful idiot.

Bush meat...a "free lunch"...eating everything one may possibly eat...poverty & tradition.
When one looks at what "we" did eat in the past (in order to survive) a lot.. During the Dutch famine early 1945 a lot of cats disappeared, rats were presented as rabbits..Ducks also had a problem... Bats may have over 30 types of corona-virus...CoViD may have been around in some parts of Africa early 2019 (and maybe an outcome of co-infection with HIV-AIDS ???). -The US for political reasons goes on "blaming China/lab leak"...is anti-science... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Africa_by_population or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_in_Africa_by_population Africa has three mega-cities with population over 10 million. Some urban agglomorations may have over 20 million people-most of them poor...We have "missed" a lot of diseases in Africa because "we do not want to know"... Poverty creates pandemics...one doctor with 100,000+ patients...(and on the other side a few rich white men claiming they own the planet...).

More than 943 patients including 52 deaths have been recorded since the beginning of February in five of the ten health areas of the Basankusu health zone. “943 cases including 52 deaths were recorded, representing a lethality rate of 5.5%. The cases are reported in five villages in 5 health areas (Ekoto, Lilangi, Lisafa, Basengela and Bafumba). The Ekoto health area remains the most affected in the Bomate village,” the health authorities reported. The disease affects all ages but with a majority of cases from 5 to 45 years old presenting symptoms such as fever, chills, headaches, myalgia, aches, neck pain, polyarthralgia etc. The first cases were reported on February 9. Of the 151 rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria carried out by the Ministry of Health teams, 84 were positive, i.e. 55.6%, and the hypothesis of a possible Ebola epidemic was ruled out. DJ keeps claiming lives...(co-infection with malaria ??)

Over the past 3 months we've seen several reports of a `mystery' outbreak in the DRC (see WHO DON: Undiagnosed disease - Democratic Republic of the Congo), and while that first outbreak was eventually attributed to a combination of severe Malaria and malnutrition, there have been more recent, similar outbreaks reported in the DRC.
While most `mystery' outbreaks turn out to be due to something already known (malnutrition, measles, malaria, meningitis, contaminated food or water, etc.), every once in a while something more exotic is at work. - Increased disease surveillance has identified in total of 1096 sick people and 60 deaths in Basankusu and Bolomba fitting a broad case definition that includes fever, headache, chills, sweating, stiff neck, muscle aches, multiple joint pain and body aches, a runny or bleeding from nose, cough, vomiting and diarrhoea. DJ, In fact the fact what is happening still is unclear might be alarming...

At least 943 people have also fallen sick and 52 died in Equateur province, with symptoms ranging from fever and fatigue to vomiting and weight loss, Dieudonne Mwamba, director general of the National Institute of Public Health, said. The World Health Organization said in a statement it had identified 1,096 cases and 60 deaths fitting the definition of the illness. "For now, our diagnosis is malaria, and we also suspect food poisoning," Mwamba told Reuters. "It's not an unknown and mysterious disease. It's a phenomenon involving children who consumed bushmeat." The WHO said in a bulletin on February 16 it has received reports indicating that children had consumed a bat carcass before the onset of symptoms... DJ....food poisening is not contagious...??? Reminds me of earlier outbreak/claim in West DRC-poverty/malaria as reason for "mystery disease"...

https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/03/who-update-risk-assessment-on-cluster.html or https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/03/who-update-risk-assessment-on-cluster.html ;
Last week WHO AFRO published a report on a DRC Investigation on Cluster of Illness and Community Deaths in Equateur Province, and while the cause remained undetermined, tests for Ebola and Marburg had come back negative.
Late yesterday the WHO published the following update, which describes the outbreak as both `localized' and `declining' - and while the cause has yet to be determined - has set the local public health risk at `moderate', and the national and global risk as `low'. - On 9 February 2025, officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported to regional health authorities a cluster of 24 unexplained community deaths in a single village in Ekoto health area, Basankusu health zone, Equateur province. As of 25 February, a total of 53 deaths have been reported, with the last death occurring on 22 February. Deaths have occurred in all age groups, but adolescents and young adults, particularly males, appeared to be disproportionately affected in the initial cluster reported. Disease progression appeared to be fast, with a median time from onset of symptoms to death of one day. Given the rapid decline in the incidence of reported deaths, their geographic clustering, the age profile of deaths and the rapid disease progression in the initial cluster, working hypotheses include chemical poisoning or a rapid onset bacterial meningitis cluster, on a background of malaria and other infectious illnesses endemic in the region. The definitive cause of illness remains undetermined, with initial samples testing negative for Ebola and Marburg viruses. Field investigations and additional laboratory testing are ongoing including but not limited to the cerebrospinal fluid testing and the toxicological analysis of environmental samples, including water and other samples to explore chemical causes. Local authorities began surveillance with a broad case definition including any individual with fever and at least one other symptom, to better understand disease patterns. The province faces a severe urban water crisis with only 5% of its urban population having access to drinking water. The water network suffers frequent leaks and has never been rehabilitated. Many households rely on unregulated private water sources such as wells, springs and streams which pose contamination risks. - https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/africa/emerging-diseases-other-health-threats-ah/1008994-kenya-who-in-kisii-to-identify-cause-of-mysterious-disease-likely-source-of-infection-is-a-contaminated-spring?view=stream">https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/africa/emerging-diseases-other-health-threats-ah/1008994-kenya-who-in-kisii-to-identify-cause-of-mysterious-disease-likely-source-of-infection-is-a-contaminated-spring?view=stream or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/africa/emerging-diseases-other-health-threats-ah/1008994-kenya-who-in-kisii-to-identify-cause-of-mysterious-disease-likely-source-of-infection-is-a-contaminated-spring?view=stream DJ, More then a billion people need safe drinkable water, good toilets...but the world is investing in wars... |
