https://english.news.cn/europe/20250128/00183759eecb40e48cc9d574e5d62f85/c.html or https://english.news.cn/europe/20250128/00183759eecb40e48cc9d574e5d62f85/c.html ; HELSINKI, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Denmark has unveiled plans to bolster its military presence in the Arctic amid rising concerns over the U.S. interest in acquiring Greenland, a Danish-owned territory.

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced late Monday that the government will allocate 14.6 billion Danish krona (approximately 2 billion U.S. dollars) to boost the defence of Greenland, Arctic Sea and Northern Atlantic. The decision follows an agreement among Danish political parties.

The plans will include three new arctic naval vessels and two long-range drones, increased surveillance and crisis training for the local residents. Poulsen said in a press conference that these preparations are just the initial phase, with further plans expected to be finalized by summer.

According to Danish Broadcasting Corporation, the new vessels would enter service within five or six years, expected to replace existing vessels.

When questioned about whether these measures would "calm down" U.S. President Donald Trump's interest in Greenland, Poulsen refrained from a direct response, underlining the importance of co-operation with NATO allies, including Canada, the United States and Norway.

President Trump has recently reiterated the U.S. interest in Greenland, which remains an autonomous area under Danish sovereignty.

Referring to an upcoming meeting on Tuesday with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Europe is in a serious situation. "With war on the continent and changes in the geopolitical reality. In such a time, unity is crucial."

DJ, "western media/propaganda" (cnn, bbc, reuters, dw etc) also "mentioned" this news...A lot of Danish news behind paywall...Xinhua is Chines...at a certain distance...

The 2 billion extra Danish defense spending has to be a part of a wider program.
-Less spending on US weapons if trump becomes a risk would be "more then wise"...Sweden has a major defense industry...
-Finding allies may strengthen the Danish/Greenland position...Canada HAS to be a major ally. Norway-in Svalbard (Spitsbergen Dutch and Russian name a.o.) also can be of use...
-Speeding up talks on Greenland independence/protection also is welcome...
-Closing US bases in Greenland should be an option if trump does increase pressure...
(DJ-Closing US occupation may mean cutting supply lines...The US "stayed" after World War Two..NEVER was invited by a Danish government !

https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/russia-militarily-dominating-arctic-working-china-us-slips-behind-study  or https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/russia-militarily-dominating-arctic-working-china-us-slips-behind-study ;

NATO actually currently has five more military sites in total than Russia, but the Russian military's bases are far larger. The Simons Foundation Canada has documented in a fresh study that Russia has 32 "continuously attended military sites" in the Arctic region as of 2024.

Notably the outposts located Franz Josef Land, Kotelny Island, and Wrangel Island are able to house up to 150 ground troops each.

One of NATO's founding members, Norway, maintains 15 "continuously attended military sites". And per The Simons Foundation report, other NATO members have as follows:

  • United States: 10 Arctic sites
  • Canada: 8 Arctic sites
  • Denmark: 3 Arctic sites, which are in Greenland
  • Iceland: 1 Arctic site

Still, Russia's military has warned that "the Arctic is a region for potential future conflict" amid the global build-up there, according to Russia’s Commander of the Northern Fleet, Aleksandr Moiseyev.

As for China-Russian cooperation in the far north, the fresh WSJ report observes in the following:

That support has been prominent in the Arctic, where Chinese companies are significant investors and equipment suppliers in Russian energy projects including the Yamal LNG and Arctic 2 LNG projects.

Russia, in return, has been shipping fuel to China using its so-called shadow fleet, by which sanctioned vessels make illicit deliveries of Russian oil to markets in Asia. Last year saw a record volume for transit cargo through the Northern Sea Route from northwestern Russia to the Bering Strait, according to Rosatom, the Russian agency that oversees the waterway. Almost all of that cargo went from Russia to China, and more than half was crude oil. The total volume remains a fraction of crude-oil traffic through the Suez Canal: While the northern route’s shorter distance can cut transit times by two weeks, sea ice remains a treacherous obstacle despite shrinking ice cover.

DJ, Russia also has stronger ice-breakers. Control from Murmansk to Magadan gives Russia a better control-more room to move...The NW passage between Greenland and Canada has more ice most of the time...

DJ, A basic problem for Greenland is its very small population...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland# or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenland# ...population under 60,000

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland has a population under 400,000...In the past the US also "showed interest" in taking over Iceland...(partly on European, partly on American continental shell).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands also has a small population-around 55,000 people...

All three share Danish colonization history-with Greenland also an Inuit majority...

So could "GIF" Greenland-Iceland-Faroe federation work ?

DJ-The "GIF-model" would protect local cultures and intersts...What could "joining the US" bring ?

If Greenland, Iceland would make a choice to "join the US" it could result in population growth...It could become a "North Atlantic Alaska" ..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska ;population just over 740, 000...over twice the GIF-population...

People could move to Greenland, Iceland for retirement, tourism...Iceland could use heat from its volcanos for glass houses to increase local foodproduction...

Food prices in GIF are very high-with very low local production capacity other then fish, sheep...Iceland has an IKEA...but most of the GIF-countries simply have a much too small market for larger scale foodproduction, low-cost supermarkets...

However GIF joining the US would END local culture...Hawaii may indicate how the US did end the local culture there...Joining the US would mean more then introduction of the US$...It would make English(American) the main language...very likely bring a "wild west culture" since both mining, fishing and agriculture in general is not the "best kind of work" ...(hard working-long hours-low pay, high risk...)

So could "GIF" Greenland-Iceland-Faroe profit from joining the US ? Very likely the US would profit much more...

Greenland-Canada cooperation ? Most of Canadians live in a 100 miles/160 kilometer zone from the US border...I did see a question on Canada joining the EU...part of the EU idea was countries close to eachother going for better cooperation (in part to support peace).

The UK is out of the EU...maybe Canada may work with the UK-has more links with that ?
If the UK would rejoin the EU however...interesting...

For now Canada in the present EU may increase tensions between the French speaking and English speaking groups...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada#Languages or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada#Languages ;A multitude of languages are used by Canadians, with English and French (the official languages) being the mother tongues of approximately 54 percent and 19 percent of Canadians, respectively.[289] Canada's official bilingualism policies give citizens the right to receive federal government services in either English or French with official-language minorities guaranteed their own schools in all provinces and territories.[306]

see also; Canada has one of the highest per-capita immigration rates in the world,[279] driven mainly by economic policy and family reunification.[280] A record 405,000 immigrants were admitted in 2021.[281] Canada leads the world in refugee resettlement; it resettled more than 47,600 in 2022.[282] New immigrants settle mostly in major urban areas, such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.[283]

DJ, Say Canada would in a referendum decide it wants to join the US...Around 8 million people speaking French, millions of recent immigrants would join the US...

YES the Canadian $ would be replaced by the US$...in land area the US would "get big"...Canadian energy, gold, uranium would become US "wealth" -however most of it already is exported to the US...

If you want "open borders" there are other ways to create that-you do not need to see Canada joining the US...

Still if you believe "Gulf of America" is improvement some people may think Canada joining the US is a step forward...It may see more chances for US democratic party though...
