DJ...the big question is how H5N1 very widespread in the US, but H5N1 is a global problem, is already "mixed" with other types of flu... Some "optimists" claim "we can end pandemics if we all use masks/eyeprotection, ventilation...DJ-It would slow down the process...like vaccines-limit disease (lower viral load). The BIG problem however; Lots of diseases are also spreading in lots of other species...so the diseases have tens of billions of (potential) hosts-with all kinds of mutations/recombinations happening... One may claim the Spanish H1N1-flu (1917-1923) mainly was a human problem. Selflimiting because after infection people did get immunity against the H1N1 virus...With also a side note that bacterial co-infections and immune-overreaction did kill a lot of the 20-100 million people in those days... Since 2019 CoViD-19/SARS-2 may have done THREE things; -Acute disease, may have killed 32-40 million (official statistic at 7 million...but that ignores untested CoViD deaths...) -Long CoViD, damage to organs by the virus/bloodcloths etc. -Immunity damage in BILLIONS !!! of humans ! An estimate that I take serious is over half of the global population may have had CoViD at least once...

DJ-CoViD is NOT a type of flu...it is a COrona-VIrus-Disease (CoViD) with the corona virus able to stay behind, hide in organs...NOT creating the "group/herd" immunity some "experts" hoped for...
Even worse...even "cold" corona-virusses may have been underestimated. Not only bringing "a cold" but maybe linked to ME-CFS... Saving the economy meant ignoring public health...marginalizing Long CoViD, ME-CFS patients...simply denying the problem... Immunity gets exhausted because of re-infections AND CoViD staying in the host... DJ-I am NOT any kind of expert...a risk in "experts" can be a (certain) tunnelvision. So Mpox, H5N1, HMPV etc. "going for new horizons" is NOT linked-by some experts-as CoViD-damage related...Just like high(er) excess deaths due to hearth, ung, brain issues are NOT linked to CoViD-damage... DJ-It makes me wonder how "science" works...The WHO -for years-denying aerosol CoViD spread.. So what will be next ? A global wave of Ebola, Marburg-virus ? Measles able to evade immunity ? Or an animal disease-very limited so far-able to go into many species ? "Political blame games" make matters only worse...

DJ, "limited new news"...the US H5N1-story is partly "political" ?
CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES Norovirus outbreak reported at Pasadena evacuation shelter Posted: Jan 17, 2025 / 01:07 PM PST Updated: Jan 17, 2025 / 01:07 PM PST by: Austin Turner An outbreak of the norovirus has been reported at the Pasadena Evacuation Center, officials confirmed. The Pasadena Public Health Department said that three cases of the norovirus were confirmed at the Pasadena Convention Center shelter on Friday morning. Those three diagnoses come as a cluster of 28 people battle acute gastrointestinal illness. Since Jan. 10, the American Red Cross has been operating the shelter, which is designed to house Eaton Fire victims who lost their homes or were forced to evacuate. ... The PPHD said crews at the evacuation shelter are making sure to isolate the individuals who became sick and are working with onsite medical teams from Kaiser Permanente and AltaMed to provide the necessary medical aid. DJ, Both CoViD and H5N1 are widespread around the globe in many species and co-spreading. The idea of "group immunity after infection" for CoViD is anti-science...eventough some still promote that insanity...Flu may be self-limiting-infection creating immunity against the same flu-variant...and it may offer some protection against "similar" types of flu ? H5N1 is -very likely-already mixed in with H1N1/H3N2-flu now spreading in many countries...co-infection with CoViD (some variants may "mix" better ?) "flu-rona" may result in more severe disease... HMPV seems to be a growing other global risk (with RS-virus, measles, Mpox etc also a widespread problem). - Non Pharma Intervention is something YOU control ! -Information the major tool ! -Ventilation is lowering viral load (for flu, CoViD etc !) -Masks/eye-protection means the virus will have less chance of getting into you ! -Vaccines lower risks after infection - in general -Limit travel-do not spread the viruses...Very likely MOST of the spread may be a/pre-symptomatic ! -Avoid-if possible-crowds... DJ-A "bigger picture" is disease will become such a big problem even trump&co may have to admit some steps are needed...Pumping in more tax money into BiG Pharma share holders is "a common neo-liberal" reflex...Most non-western countries see Big Pharma as strategic; if not state owned at least state controlled; You do NOT make profits out of crises...exploiting crises for profits is in the way of solving those crises... It may be too late for the climate crises...but we should be able to limit pandemics if we want to... |

https://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/2025/01/articles/animals/dogs/influenza-vaccination-in-dogs-cross-protection-against-h5n1/ or https://www.wormsandgermsblog.com/2025/01/articles/animals/dogs/influenza-vaccination-in-dogs-cross-protection-against-h5n1/ ;
These days I commonly get the question ”Does vaccination of dogs with available canine influenza vaccines protect them from H5N1 avian flu?” While we don’t have any hard data on this, we still have a pretty good idea of the answer. One of the challenges with flu vaccination (in any species, including humans) is the lack of good cross protection between strains (e.g. H3N2 vs H1N1 vs H5N1). In general, we assume there’s little to no cross-protection, and organizations such as CDC, Public Health Agency of Canada and WHO have stated that seasonal flu vaccines don’t offer any protection to people against H5N1 flu. That said, theoretically there there may be a bit of protection, though it’s hard to have confidence in that based on data from older lab animal studies. One study (Rockman et al. J Virol 2013) showed that ferrets vaccinated with human seasonal flu vaccine had partial protection against challenge with H5N1 flu. They determined that this was from the H1N1 component of the vaccine, and was predominantly from the neuraminidase (N) part (H5N1 and H1N1 have the same N1). While we typically pay more attention to the H component for vaccination, the similarity in N may be useful. That means there may be some protection of people from H5N1 flu if they’re vaccinated for seasonal flu, but not a lot, and we have to be careful extrapolating too much from older studies using different types of H5N1 in lab animal models. DJ, There are indications age may be a factor in H5N1 human cases. Older people may have had "flu" more often-could have better protection against the "N1" part of H5N1... For that matter statistics may offer some perspective... Canine flu vaccines target H3N2 canine flu, plus or minus H3N8 canine flu strain. (Realistically we only care about H3N2 now, since H3N8 appears to have disappeared as of a few years ago.) Those are quite different from H5N1 avian flu in flu terms. Since there’s no overlap in the Hs or Ns, we wouldn’t expect to even have that small theoretical cross-protection benefit. If we had an H1N1 canine flu strain, maybe there’d be some protection, but (thankfully!) we don’t. Does canine flu vaccination help protect against flu recombination? Recombination (mixing) of different flu strains in the same host (human or animal) to create a new, more problematic strain is certainly a concern. We don’t want someone to be infected with seasonal flu and H5N1 flu at the same time, as that creates the potential for a new flu strain to emerge that has the hallmarks of a human flu (readily infected people, effective human-to-human transmission) but has picked up enough H5N1 bits that we don’t have protection from previous exposure or vaccination and may can cause more severe disease. So even though seasonal flu vaccines in people don’t protect against H5N1 flu, there is still benefit from reducing the human seasonal flu burden, as it in turn reduces the risk that a person will be infected with multiple flu strains at the same time, which reduces the chances of recombination. Does the same principle apply to vaccination of dogs against canine flu? It’s a stretch. There could be some potential benefits for canine health, but probably not much benefit for public health. Canine flu is much rarer than seasonal flu is in people, so there’s less potential benefit simply because there’s less disease to prevent. There’s also less baseline protection against canine flu in dogs because it’s rare and therefore vaccination is uncommon. So from a disease transmission standpoint for dogs, a new flu strain against which they don’t have immunity isn’t that different from the current H3N2 canine flu strain, since most dogs don’t have immunity to that either. DJ, limiting flu spread in mammals = limiting risks of a flu pandemic ! Public health benefits would be less of a reason to promote vaccination of dogs against canine flu stains. Canine H3N2 flu poses little risk of infection of people, so a hybrid of canine H3N2 and H5N1 wouldn’t be expected to be more transmissible to people (even though it would potentially add some mammalian adaptations to an H5N1-related virus, which is definitely not the direction we want the virus to go). For dogs to be a flu “mixing vessel” of public health concern, a human flu strain would need to be involved. While dogs can occasionally be infected with human flu strains, the odds of a dog having H3N2, human seasonal flu and H5N1 at the same time are pretty low. Even then, whether or not the dog was vaccinated against H3N2 wouldn’t really affect the risk, since we’d be primarily concerned about the human flu and the H5N1 flu mixing in the dog, not whether or not H3N2 joins the party. DJ, Cats, pigs are a different story-both better able to catch/mix human flu types with H5N1...but the major "mixing vessel" are humans themselves ! And again-CoViD did do a lot of immunity damage...so it may open doors to types of flu we would NOT expect to see in humans ! < aria-label="Grok s" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> < aria-expanded="false" aria-haspopup="menu" aria-label="More" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" -testid="caret" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> Rhode Island reports first measles case since 2013 DJ, there is some "wishfull thinking" immunity against flu may mean better immunity against a lot of diseases...For now there are NO real indications for that...An over-active immune response may bring harm-severe disease/death or auto-immune diseases... So avoiding infection is the better alternative ! FFP-2/(K)N-95 masks stops most viruses...

“There can't be a crisis next week, my schedule is already full.” ― Henry Kissinger or “It is not a matter of what is true that counts, but a matter of what is perceived to be true.” ― Henry KissingerDJ, So will the "H5N1-hysteria" in the US become more realistic ? YES-there is a very major H5N1 problem in the US ! NO-most likely the biggest risk from H5N1 will be it will mix with high risk other types of flu-both for humans and animals... And "flu" is just one of the US/global problems ! CoViD -"mild"- is still resulting in lots of excess deaths in many places...But ignoring the damage CoViD does to the hearths, brains, other organs results in those (often high !!) excess deaths NOT linked to CoViD... Long CoViD widespread, immunity damage opening the doors to Mpox, HMPV, H5N1...but "CoViD is mild"... https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/media-in-pakistan-reporting-surge-in-covid-19-cases-and-hospitalizations-while-also-announcing-the-first-case-of-hmpv or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/media-in-pakistan-reporting-surge-in-covid-19-cases-and-hospitalizations-while-also-announcing-the-first-case-of-hmpv - https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/india/india-emerging-diseases-and-other-health-threats/1002614-india-14-deaths-in-undiagnosed-disease-rajouri-kashmir-region-december-8?view=stream or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/india/india-emerging-diseases-and-other-health-threats/1002614-india-14-deaths-in-undiagnosed-disease-rajouri-kashmir-region-december-8?view=stream ; Published 19.01.25, 09:48 PM PTI A high-level inter-ministerial team Sunday reached Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district where a mysterious illness is wreaking havoc, killing another person on Sunday and taking the death toll to 17. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had on Saturday ordered the constitution of an inter-ministerial team to ascertain the causes of deaths that took place within weeks in three families linked to each other in the remote Badhaal village. Yasmeen Kousar, the last of the six children of Mohd Aslam undergoing treatment at SMGS hospital in Jammu, died this evening, officials said. Kousar's five siblings and grandparents died last week. Nine other members of two families had died in the village between December 7 and 12. "J&K health department and other departments probed the deaths but the exact cause has not be found yet. The Home Minister has constituted a team of inter-ministerial experts and they have reached here," Lt Governor Manoj Sinha told reporters ... The patients complained of fever, pain, nausea and loss of consciousness before dying within days of their admission to hospitals. ... ... Jammu and Kashmir government spokesperson said investigations and samples empirically indicated that the incidents were not due to a communicable disease of bacterial or viral origin and that there is no public health angle. FMD and bird flu: will people soon get sick from all animal viruses?16 januari, 20:56 WAGENINGEN - Increasingly, there is an outbreak of viruses in animals that are transmissible to humans. With a circulating bird flu virus and the threat of foot-and-mouth disease, the question arises whether Gelderlanders should already worry about their own health? "If there is one virus that is not dangerous to humans, it is foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)," assures Aldo Dekker of Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR). "FMD is an animal disease to which humans are insensitive." Although people can get sick from it. In the future, Dekker does not expect farmers and local residents to have to fear for their health because of foot-and-mouth disease. "In the last thousand years, FMD has never been a danger to humans. At least, not for their health. Of course, it brings a lot to the table for farmers who have to clear their farms." Deaths are rare in EuropeIt is different with bird flu in poultry. The highly pathogenic bird flu virus (also known as the highly pathogenic virus (HPAI)) falls under the so-called zoonoses. This means that the infection can be transmitted from animals to humans and vice versa. When infected with bird flu, people can sometimes suffer from an eye infection, sometimes also pneumonia, says Armin Elbers, who works at the WBVR as an epidemiologist. In 2003, a Dutch veterinarian died of the virus. Elbers: "That is very exceptional. Deaths in humans due to infection with the bird flu virus are rare in Europe. In Southeast Asia and the Middle East, however, we see this much more often in people who have unsafe contact with infected poultry." Protection against bird fluThe measures in the Netherlands - such as the obligation to keep animals indoors a nd the transport ban - are aimed at preventing the virus from spreading further in the Netherlands among animals and humans. Bird flu control agents who have to cull poultry farms are given antiviral drugs and special clothing, a face mask and gloves to prevent them from becoming infected with the virus. They are also vaccinated with the human flu virus to prevent the exchange of genetic material in humans in the event of a simultaneous infection with a human flu virus and a bird flu virus, which could lead to the emergence of new flu viruses. There is no bird flu vaccine for humans yet and it remains to be seen whether there will be. The virus, like the human flu virus, changes very quickly. People can become infected if they have touched an animal with bird flu and then have not washed their hands properly. Or when people come into contact with the contaminated blood during slaughter. The virus could also spread over short distances through the air. Elbers: "This concerns, for example, infected birds that are held in the hand by a human and where virus particles can be inhaled by humans via the spluttering of the infected bird via fine water droplets (aerosols)." At the moment, there are no known cases of bird flu infections in the Netherlands, reports the RIVM. It also estimates the risk of transmission of the virus to humans with the current variant to be very small. Stay alertNevertheless, virologist Marion Koopmans warned last weekend in EenVandaag that viruses are in danger of mutating. According to her, this could result in a pandemic. There is currently no acute danger to humans, says Wim van der Poel, professor of zoonotic viruses at the University of Wageningen. The Netherlands just needs to stay alert. "We are seeing an increase in the number of zoological outbreaks. This is because the world population is growing, as is the number of animals kept." It becomes more dangerous when a virus mutates, Van der Poel explains. He points to the bird flu infection among cattle in the US. The virus has already infected people there and about sixty people have already become ill from the infection in the US. Van der Poel: "I share the opinion of fellow virologist Marion Koopmans that we must already work now to prevent a pandemic. We have to be vigilant that the virus does not jump to humans, livestock farmers must continue to identify the virus properly and we must work on the development of a vaccine in the animals." Because, he explains, it is unknown how the virus will develop further. "If many people become infected and become ill, the risk of deaths is also greater. Just look at the covid pandemic." Q fever and tapewormAnother well-known zoonosis is Q fever. People can become seriously ill if infected with this. Yet there is hardly any risk of infection. Due to the vaccination requirement for goats and sheep, the virus is only occasionally detected in our country on an annual basis. There is also a tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) in foxes that can cause serious disease in humans. As far as is known, Gelderlanders will not yet have to deal with this, says the RIVM. Currently, this disease occurs mainly in Limburg and East Groningen. DJ, We have hundreds of people with chronic Q-fever in NL. CoViD may bring diseases in humans we did not see earlier (on this scale) ... A part of the "science" may be more wishfull thinking...

https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/01/eid-journal-henipavirus-in-northern.html or https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/01/eid-journal-henipavirus-in-northern.html ;
UK HAIRS Timeline - 20 years of Emerging Viruses #18,572 A dozen years ago, in in mBio: A Strategy To Estimate The Number Of Undiscovered Viruses, we saw an early attempt to estimate the number of undiscovered mammalian viruses in the world. Researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, EcoHealth Alliance, the NIH, et al. came up with `. . . minimum of 320,000 mammalian viruses awaiting discovery.' Of course, that is just an estimate. Some researchers put that number well over 1 million. Like it or not, we live in a pathogen-rich environment, and every few months we learn about some new or expanding disease threat in the wild (see HAIRS timeline above). Most of these viruses will have a narrow host-range, or only be slightly zoonotic. Meaning their impact on public health will be nil. But a significant number will be capable of spilling over into humans and causing varying levels of disease.Less than 3 years ago, NEJM: A Novel Henipavirus With Human Spillover In China, we looked at initial reports of A Novel Henipavirus With Human Spillover In China, which researchers described as a phylogenetically distinct henipavirus - dubbed Langya henipavirus (LayV) - which they isolated from the throats of 35 fever patients who reported recent animal exposure. This initial report indicated - in addition to the confirmed human infections - that genetic testing of 25 animals found low levels of the virus in dogs (5%) and goats (2%), but much higher levels (27%) in shrews, which they suspect may be the reservoir host for this virus. While fruit bats are normally thought of as the primary host for Henipaviruses, some studies (see Recently Emerged Novel Henipa-like Viruses: Shining a Spotlight on the Shrew) increasingly suggest that shrews, rats, and even opossums play a role in its ecology. Last August, in Nature: Decoding the RNA Viromes in Shrew Lungs Along the Eastern Coast of China, researchers described a remarkably diverse range of pathogens (including influenza H5N6) in Shrews captured along the East Coast of China. The authors wrote:
Although many of these studies have been conducted in far-flung places like China, the United States is not without a history of emerging viruses.
All of which brings us to an EID Journal report on the discovery of a novel Henipavirus in woodland shrews in Northern Alabama. While no human infections have been reported, this is significant because:
-- The discovery of a novel henipavirus in B. brevicauda shrews highlights the potential of this shrew species as a zoonotic reservoir, capable of harboring multiple viruses that pose a risk to humans. Of note, the B. brevicauda shrew is a known host of Camp Ripley virus (genus Orthohantavirus) (6,7), a viral genus associated with severe human disease. Camp Ripley virus was abundant in tissues from all the individual shrews analyzed, suggesting mixed co-infections of hantaviruses and henipaviruses in the shrews we studied. In addition, a prior report has implicated B. brevicauda shrews as reservoir for Powassan virus (genus Orthoflavivirus) (8), capable of causing life-threatening encephalitis. -- Admittedly, the public health impact of this North American Henipavirus may never amount to much, but 15 years ago no one could have predicted that camels would become the host species - and primary spillover threat - of a deadly coronavirus (MERS-CoV).
And despite many conflicting theories, the origins of Sars-CoV-2 remain murky at best, while a year ago the notion of hundreds of American dairy herds infected with HPAI H5N1 would have been dismissed as highly unlikely. A reminder that what may seem like a trivial, or incidental finding today, could become a much bigger concern tomorrow. DJ, The decrease of human/mammal immune protection after CoViD may result in "us" having a lot less protection against lots of diseases...So those diseases can spread much more in mammals and become an increasing risk for humans... H5N1, Mpox, HMPV all may be linked to decrease of immunity in humans after CoViD..
