DJ. Maybe to underline the complexity...Not only diseases and co-infections can bring harm-also immunity (over) reaction may do harm.

A part of auto-immune diseases are linked to a prior infection. The immune system not only attacked the virus/bacteria/fungus/prion...but also the organs in the host.

DJ-I am not surprised a country like China is not able to give a clear picture...Countries like China, India-with a population of 1,4 billion people-have a "normal" of lots of diseases...

To find out what is causing the disease takes time...With HMPV it may be the virus itself may be of a lesser risk then bacterial coinfections...

DJ-Just like with H5N1 also in the HMPV-'story" it would be welcome to know more about CoViD-infection(s) history...Did CoViD open the door to HMPV (or Mpox ?) or "just worsened" the disease ?

Also age/gender matters...CoViD still may kill more men because men have more ACE-2 receptors so "CoViD" has a better grip...It may also help to explain why women do get more auto-immune disease (and Long CoViD)...With ME-CFS up to 80% of the patients are women...

Cattle H5N1 spread into cattle-farm workers is linked to a receptor (link to H5N1) that may be similar in cow udders and human eyes...

Earlier infection with H1N1 or H3N2 may "make a difference" in disease after H5N1 infection. So young people may run more risk-because of a lack of earlier flu infections...

A stupid often made remark; "what does not kill you makes you stronger" may kill...What does not kill you makes you weaker may be more realistic !

Even a flu or cold may result in chronic-long term-health issues-besides some increase in immunity against another flu or cold...That "increase of immunity" may not be that strong or long lasting-while health damage may be there for the rest of the host live...

DJ-Somehow "humans" got the idea of being "above nature"...that idea is deathly wrong !

DJ, one of the -in my opinion- best sources for "pandemic-info";

https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/01/hkchp-reports-1-new-h10n3-case-on.html or https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/01/hkchp-reports-1-new-h10n3-case-on.html ;

Although there is no mention of it in China's latest Weekly Influenza Report, today Hong Kong's Weekly Avian Influenza Report VOLUME 21, NUMBER 2, carries the cryptic graphic above showing 2 recent H9N2 cases and 1 H10N3 case.

As is so often the case, we get little or no details. Only that they exist. Hopefully we'll get more details from the next WHO report.

Over the past 6 months China has reported 11 other H9N2 cases (see Hong Kong CHP: 7 Recent H9N2 Cases Reported From the Mainland), a decided uptick in detection.

While LPAI H9N2 is admittedly not at the very top of our list of pandemic concerns, the CDC has 2 different lineages (A(H9N2) G1 and A(H9N2) Y280) on their short list of influenza viruses with zoonotic potential (see CDC IRAT SCORE), and several candidate vaccines have been developed.

Only about 140 cases have been officially reported over the past 20 years (see FluTrackers list), and most (but not all) of them have reported mild or moderate illnessSeroprevalence studies, however, suggest the infection is far more common than we believe.

Of considerably more interest is the announcement of a 4th H10N3 case in China since 2021.

Last July, in Frontiers: Phylogenetic and Mutational Analysis of H10N3 Avian Influenza A virus in China: Potential Threats to Human Health, we looked at a report that described 4 mutations of concern in the 2023 case (HA Q226LPB2 D701NPA S409N, and M2 S31N), along with the patient's treatment and course of illness.

Less than a month ago, in Vet. Microbiology: The novel H10N3 Avian Influenza Virus Acquired Airborne Transmission Among Chickens: An Increasing Threat to Public Health, which reported the virus has become better adapted to poultry, is highly pathogenic in mice, can be transmitted via respiratory droplets between guinea pigs, and can also be transmitted via the airborne route by chickens.

They also reported on a serology study of poultry workers, which found a small but significant (1.5%) positivity rate.

The overarching message from these reports is that avian influenza viruses continue to expand - both in range and variety - across China and the rest of the globe, and that some of these viruses pose legitimate public health risks.

Although China remains tight-lipped about their avian flu problem, last week we did see a decree from Shanghai Banning Live Poultry Sales. Why now, and why in Shanghai, wasn't divulged.

While HPAI H5 may have most of our attention, the reality is there are many more zoonotic threat out there in the wild, most of which are only poorly monitored.  All of which makes it very easy for us to get blindsided by something out of the blue.

DJ, H9N2, H10N3...with lots of other types of flu...(and A,B,C and D types of flu in humans-many other species)...there is a risk of "mixing" with higher risk types of A-flu H1/H2/H3...

https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/01/la-county-animal-han-h5-bird-flu.html or https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/01/la-county-animal-han-h5-bird-flu.html ;

Just over a month ago (Dec 12th) the LA County Department of Public Health announced two cats had died after consuming raw milk, and H5 was strongly suspected. A week later, the LADPH confirmed H5 infection in two cats in a second household, and announced they were investigating 3 other sick cats at the same location.

Unlike the first event - which was linked to raw milk - the second outbreak was tentatively linked to the consumption of two brands of commercial raw meat pet food (see recall notices).

While LADPH's attentions have understandably been focused primarily on their  wildfire crisis, yesterday their Veterinary Health division issued their first H5N1 HAN of 2025, announcing 3 more confirmed feline H5N1 infections.

As this HAN alert reminds us, feline infections and/or deaths from H5N1 are underreported. They cite `multiple H5 bird flu probable and suspected cases'which were never tested, and are urging Veterinarians to report suspected cases.

In early December, in Emerg. Microbes & Inf.: Marked Neurotropism and Potential Adaptation of H5N1 Clade 2.3.4.4.b Virus in Naturally Infected Domestic Catswe looked at a report on the HPAI H5 infection of a house full of domestic cats in South Dakota last April.

Isolates from the two cats that were tested showed signs of viral adaptation to a mammalian host.  The authors wrote:

Cat H5N1 genomes had unique mutations, including T143A in haemagglutinin, known to affect infectivity and immune evasion, and two novel mutations in PA protein (F314L, L342Q) that may affect polymerase activity and virulence, suggesting potential virus adaptation.

Dead cats showed systemic infection with lesions and viral antigens in multiple organsHigher viral RNA and antigen in the brain indicated pronounced neurotropism.

While the H5 virus currently lacks the ability to transmit efficiently from human-to-human, every mammalian infection is another opportunity for the virus to hone its abilities.

DJ, Even when the H5N1 in cats can be linked to infected milk/cat food the further H5N1 can spread the more it may mutate towards better spread in mammals (including humans).
