   DJ. Maybe to underline the complexity...Not only diseases and co-infections can bring harm-also immunity (over) reaction may do harm.
A part of auto-immune diseases are linked to a prior infection. The immune system not only attacked the virus/bacteria/fungus/prion...but also the organs in the host. 

DJ-I am not surprised a country like China is not able to give a clear picture...Countries like China, India-with a population of 1,4 billion people-have a "normal" of lots of diseases...

To find out what is causing the disease takes time...With HMPV it may be the virus itself may be of a lesser risk then bacterial coinfections...

DJ-Just like with H5N1 also in the HMPV-'story" it would be welcome to know more about CoViD-infection(s) history...Did CoViD open the door to HMPV (or Mpox ?) or "just worsened" the disease ? 

Also age/gender matters...CoViD still may kill more men because men have more ACE-2 receptors so "CoViD" has a better grip...It may also help to explain why women do get more auto-immune disease (and Long CoViD)...With ME-CFS up to 80% of the patients are women...

Cattle H5N1 spread into cattle-farm workers is linked to a receptor (link to H5N1) that may be similar in cow udders and human eyes...

Earlier infection with H1N1 or H3N2 may "make a difference" in disease after H5N1 infection. So young people may run more risk-because of a lack of earlier flu infections...

A stupid often made remark; "what does not kill you makes you stronger" may kill...What does not kill you makes you weaker may be more realistic ! 

Even a flu or cold may result in chronic-long term-health issues-besides some increase in immunity against another flu or cold...That "increase of immunity" may not be that strong or long lasting-while health damage may be there for the rest of the host live...

DJ-Somehow "humans" got the idea of being "above nature"...that idea is deathly wrong !
