DJ, ONE person in NL was found to be-most likely-infected with Lassa fever. He returned from West Africa. (No links yet in English)

In 2019 NL had two imported cases; https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications-data/rapid-risk-assessment-cases-lassa-fever-netherlands-ex-sierra-leone or https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications-data/rapid-risk-assessment-cases-lassa-fever-netherlands-ex-sierra-leone ;On 20 and 24 November 2019, respectively, the Dutch public health authorities confirmed two imported cases of Lassa fever from Sierra Leone. Both were Dutch healthcare workers who worked in a rural hospital in Sierra Leone. EU/EEA travellers or EU/EEA citizens residing in Sierra Leone should be informed of the risk of exposure to Lassa virus, particularly in areas where Mastomys spp. rodents are present and during the main transmission season (roughly from November until April).

Someone who may be carrying a highly contagious disease walked into a general practice in Heemskerk tonight. The area has been widely cordoned off by emergency services

This concerns Broekpolder general practice at the Steenhouwerskwartier. A spokesperson for the Kennemerland Safety Region says that a male patient has been isolated in the building. “A special ambulance team is on the way to transport him.

“He came in with a general malaise and felt ill. That's what the doctor came to.”

Which disease the patient is infected with is currently still unclear. “He came in with a general malaise and felt ill. That's what the doctor called for.”

Many emergency services available

According to NH reporter Thomas Jak, the police are blocking the Laan van Broekpolder. “There are also a lot of fire vans and the street is lined with ribbons. Many local residents are on the street. There is no panic, everyone is calm.”

Local residents tell Jak that people still came out of the building around 7 p.m. “They were told that someone with a highly contagious disease was in the general practice

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lassa_fever or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lassa_fever ;

Lassa fever, also known as Lassa hemorrhagic fever, is a type of viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus.[1] Many of those infected by the virus do not develop symptoms.[1] When symptoms occur they typically include fever, weakness, headaches, vomiting, and muscle pains.[1] Less commonly there may be bleeding from the mouth or gastrointestinal tract.[1] The risk of death once infected is about one percent and frequently occurs within two weeks of the onset of symptoms.[1] Of those who survive, about a quarter have hearing loss, which improves within three months in about half of these cases.[1][3][4]

The disease is usually initially spread to people via contact with the urine or feces of an infected multimammate mouse.[1] Spread can then occur via direct contact between people.[1][5] Diagnosis based on symptoms is difficult.[1] Confirmation is by laboratory testing to detect the virus's RNAantibodies for the virus, or the virus itself in cell culture.[1] Other conditions that may present similarly include Ebolamalariatyphoid fever, and yellow fever.[1] The Lassa virus is a member of the Arenaviridae family of viruses.[1]

2025 outbreak

[edit]

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control reports 214 Lassa fever cases, 39 deaths in 2025, which increased compared to that reported for the same period in 2024.[66]

-

The Lassa virus is one of several viruses identified by WHO as a likely cause of a future epidemic. They therefore list it for urgent research and development to develop new diagnostic tests, vaccines, and medicines.[70][71]

In 2007, SIGA Technologies, studied a medication in guinea pig with Lassa fever.[72] Work on a vaccine is continuing, with multiple approaches showing positive results in animal trials.[73]

Malaria...not Lassa fever...

https://www.nhnieuws.nl/nieuws/346656/zieke-man-in-heemskerk-heeft-malaria-geen-risico-op-besmetting or https://www.nhnieuws.nl/nieuws/346656/zieke-man-in-heemskerk-heeft-malaria-geen-risico-op-besmetting ;

Infected man does not appear to have a tropical disease after all

The man from Heemskerk, who was quarantined after a visit to the doctor on Thursday evening due to a possible tropical illness, does not appear to have it. This is what the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) tells RTL

The 37-year-old man walked into the general practice in Heemskerk last night with complaints. Because the man had been in a West African country and had symptoms that may be related to a tropical illness, he was quarantined and taken to hospital.

Three health center employees and two ambulance workers had also come into contact with the man, but were allowed to return home the same evening.

DJ, Malaria is more widespread then only tropics...
