https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2024/06/how-hot-will-it-get.html or https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2024/06/how-hot-will-it-get.html ;
Temperatures as high as 125°F or 51.67°C are forecast to hit California on July 6, 2024, as illustrated by the image below, adapted from Climate Reanalyzer by the University of Maine. - There are numerous feedbacks that can further accelerate the temperature rise. Higher temperatures come with more water vapor in the atmosphere, an important feedback since water vapor is also a potent greenhouse gas. Surface precipitable water reached a record high of 27.139 kg/m² in July 2023, as illustrated by the image below, adapted from NOAA, from an earlier post. Worryingly, a value of 26.138 kg/m² was reached in May 2024, much higher than the 25.378 kg/m² in May 2023, which raises fears that surface precipitable water will reach an even higher peak in 2024 than was reached in 2023. DJ, It can be very cold in some places due to a totally disrupted jet-stream...The big picture however is "beyond alarming"! Climate collapse = pandemics ! H5N1 did spread even to Antarctica...only Australia/New Zealand so far did not see H5N1 in wild birds...Those birds get eaten by cat/rat like animals also catching H5N1...foxes, swines... The decline of permafrost results in more meltwater that speeds up the flow of rivers. The image on the right shows sea surface temperatures as high as 18.1°C in the Bering Strait on June 27, 2024. DJ A look at https://www.ventusky.com/?p=70.7;-34.8;3&l=temperature-2m or https://www.ventusky.com/?p=70.7;-34.8;3&l=temperature-2m showing +10C on parts of Greenland... https://www.ventusky.com/?p=70.7;-34.8;3&l=temperature-anomaly-2m or https://www.ventusky.com/?p=70.7;-34.8;3&l=temperature-anomaly-2m Mountains often have parts made up of rock kept glueed together by ice...If the ice melts parts of the mountain collapses...

The first major hurricane on its way....https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Atlantic_hurricane_season or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Atlantic_hurricane_season ; On December 11, 2023, Tropical Storm Risk (TSR) released its extended range forecast for the 2024 season, predicting an above-average season with 20 named storms, 9 hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes.[nb 1][3] They took into account ongoing warm sea-surface temperatures (SST) throughout most of the basin, specifically in the Main Development Region and in the Caribbean Sea on top of the 2023–2024 El Niño event which was predicted to weaken to a neutral phase by August 2024.[3] TSR updated their forecast on May 30, predicting 24 named storms, 12 hurricanes, and 6 major hurricanes with an ACE of 226 units.[14] On April 4, 2024, Colorado State University (CSU) released its forecast, calling for an extremely active hurricane season, with 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes, with an ACE index of 210 units, citing the extremely warm Atlantic sea surface temperatures and the development of a La Niña by the summer. DJ, It is the extremes that kill ! Lightning is a major cause for wildfires...In the past those fires did not last long so there was no need to send in firefighters...In more recent years Canada, Russia, US did send in firefighters because the wildfires did get to large-close to oil/gas/military....Air polution of those larger wild fires did kill over 100,000 people in SE Asia a few years ago...those fires were started to clear the land for agriculture...A bad habbit we see in lots of regions kept poor... Air polution, high humidity and bad (human) health is " a very unwelcome combination".... And for now we are doing all we can to make it even much worse high speed !

DJ, my view on what is needed;
-Good info on the links between climate collapse and pandemics; inform the people ! -A STOP !!!!! to global travel !!! Only very exceptional long distance travel allowed ! We have to stop spreading diseases via travel....! We have to limit polution, worsening climate disasters the best we can ! The money now ending up making the 0,1% rich even richer (by " not wasting any crisis"-even creating those crises to make profits !) is needed to provide disaster relief worldwide... NATO should provide aid NOT war ! -Bring "leaders" to trial/court...They do worsen global problems, killing tens of millions of people...If you think hitler, stalin, mao were bad...wake up ! Wars, climate disasters, pandemics since 1990 did kill very likely 50 million people+ and the trend is increasing... One could claim "learning the hard way"...only there may not be much room for "learning the hard way and surviving it"..... Pandemics, climate, wars are a deathly triangle getting out of control because of bad politics ! Pandemics are NEVER !!!! isolated events !

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health ;
The effects of climate change on human health are increasingly well studied and quantified.[1][2] Rising temperatures and changes in weather patterns are increasing the severity of heat waves, extreme weather and other causes of illness, injury or death. Heat waves and extreme weather events have a big impact on health both directly and indirectly. When people are exposed to higher temperatures for longer time periods they might experience heat illness and heat-related death.[3] In addition to direct impacts, climate change and extreme weather events cause changes in the biosphere. Certain diseases that are carried by vectors or spread by climate-sensitive pathogens may become more common in some regions. Examples include mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever, and waterborne diseases such as diarrhoeal disease.[3][4] Climate change will impact where infectious diseases are able to spread in the future. Many infectious diseases will spread to new geographic areas where people have not previously been exposed to them.[5][6] Changes in climate can cause decreasing yields for some crops and regions, resulting in higher food prices, food insecurity, and undernutrition. Climate change can also reduce water security. These factors together can lead to increasing poverty, human migration, violent conflict, and mental health issues.[7][8][3] Climate change affects human health at all ages, from infancy through adolescence, adulthood and old age.[7][3] Factors such as age, gender and socioeconomic status influence to what extent these effects become wide-spread risks to human health.[8]: 1867 Extreme weather creates climate hazards for whole families, particularly those headed by women. It can also reduce the earning capacity and economic stability of people. Populations over 65 years of age are particularly vulnerable to heat and other health effects of climate change.[7] Health risks are unevenly distributed across the world.[8] Disadvantaged people are particularly vulnerable to climate change.[3]: 15 The health effects of climate change are increasingly a matter of concern for the international public health policy community. In 2009, a publication in the general medical journal The Lancet stated that "Climate change is the biggest global health threat of the 21st century".[9] The World Health Organization reiterated this in 2015.[10] See also;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet-bulb_temperature#Wet-bulb_temperature_and_health or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet-bulb_temperature#Wet-bulb_temperature_and_health DJ-To put it very simple/basic...if both temperatures and humidity increase bodies have increasing problems cooling themselves... We are already much to close to massive deaths of mammals because of heat...

DJ Some models indicate "Beryl" may reach coastline/Houston Texas with 970 hPa...would be a cat.2 hurricane... (980 mlilbar=hPa=cat 1, 965-979=cat 2, 945-964=cat 3, 920-944=cat 4, <920 so far defined as cat 5. https://learn.weatherstem.com/modules/learn/lessons/125/ or https://learn.weatherstem.com/modules/learn/lessons/125/ lowest has been 870 hpa/mb...https://learn.weatherstem.com/modules/learn/lessons/125/18.html or https://learn.weatherstem.com/modules/learn/lessons/125/18.html (page 18) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typhoon_Tip#Records_and_meteorological_statistics; Typhoon Tip was the largest tropical cyclone on record, with a diameter of 1,380 mi (2,220 km)—almost double the previous record of 700 mi (1,130 km) in diameter set by Typhoon Marge in August 1951.[20][21][22] At its largest, Tip was nearly half the size of the contiguous United States.[23] The temperature inside the eye of Typhoon Tip at peak intensity was 30 °C (86 °F) and described as exceptionally high.[1] With 10-minute sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/h), Typhoon Tip is the strongest cyclone in the complete tropical cyclone listing by the Japan Meteorological Agency.[4] The typhoon was also the most intense tropical cyclone on record, with a pressure of 870 mbar (25.69 inHg), 5 mbar (0.15 inHg) lower than the previous record set by Super Typhoon June in 1975.[1][24][25] The records set by Tip still technically stand, though with the end of routine reconnaissance aircraft flights in the western Pacific Ocean in August 1987, modern researchers have questioned whether Tip indeed remains the strongest. - estimates for Typhoon Haiyan of 2013 indicated that its core pressure may have been as low as 858 mbar (25.34 inHg). DJ...So in the discussion on category 6, 7...maybe even 8 ? https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2024/07/feedbacks.html or https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2024/07/feedbacks.html DJ-Extreme storms bring a lot of damage but may also transport warm air to regions supposed to stay colder...Both mountains and Poles could see melt... Animals see increase of stress-resulting in more infections...Also lots of animals may deal with food problems because of these storms... It is all one system; One Health should not only link human with animal health but also link it with climate health... |

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Atlantic_hurricane_season or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_Atlantic_hurricane_season is expected to be "very active".
This may mean limited time for recovery...some area's may be hit more than once by a major storm this-and maybe-coming-year(s)... Economic damage; Gulf of Mexico oil/gas, tourism, logistics/storage will increase... Again-NOT an isolated event; -Wars since 1990-end of Soviet Union-did cost many trillions... -Long term health issues and aging mean care-costs may explode... The economic "challange" is getting too large for a lot of countries. A global reshuffle may be needed...Countries kept poor by the west have a younger population...in countries hit hard by climate collapse they did NOT cause... Countries with older populations may need "foreign (healthcare) workers"...but they only may come to countries allowing them to bring their families... Robots can NOT replace all care jobs..."Migrants" are now an issue for "populism-pseudo politicians"...soon countries may compete to get those migrants in...not out ! Climate collapse WILL result in 1-2 billion people need to be moved to places where they can survive...Parts of Asia-Africa and central America see temperatures over 50C...Soon it will be "move or die"....

Re: The 2024 melting season« Reply #516 on: July 04, 2024, 04:15:26 PM » Latest Five Day Forecast + Last 48h Wind @ Surface + Total Precipitable Water Wind @ Surface + 3-hour Precipitation Accumulation Large GiFS! An incredible burst of hot, moist air will be blowing in from Scandinavia in a few days from now. I've never seen anything like it. Yesterday that hot air mass wasn't spinning yet (see last image below), but today it did start spinning. I'm curious how fast it will begin to spin in the coming days. So definitely one to follow in the next few days. And with hot air, comes rain. So I've also added the 3-hour precipitation animation. DJ, strong storms do bring hot air to polar regions often... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Beryl or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Beryl will make landfall in Texas...may even gain some strength near the Great Lakes...could end up near Greenland in a week...

The above image, created with Climate Reanalyzer content, shows that June 2024 was substantially hotter than June 2023, which is significant since we're not in an El Niño anymore. Moreover, monthly temperatures are also rising. Arctic sea ice The danger is that feedbacks and further developments will accelerate the temperature rise even more. Critical in this respect is the condition of Arctic sea ice. The image below, adapted from the Danish Metereological Institute, indicates that Arctic sea ice volume is at a record low for the time of year, as it has been for most of the year. At the same time, sea ice extent is still relatively large; Arctic sea ice extent was 3% below average in June 2024, close to the values observed most years since 2010, according to Copernicus. The implication is that sea ice must be very thin. - The amount of energy absorbed by melting ice is as much as it takes to heat an equivalent mass of water from zero to 80°C. Loss of the latent heat buffer threatens to strongly heat up the Arctic Ocean, and this increases the danger that further heat will reach methane hydrates at the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean, causing them to get destabilized resulting in eruption of methane from these hydrates and from free gas underneath that was previously sealed by the hydrates. DJ, The less ice remains the warmer it will get...stronger storms may transport even more warmth/rain to Polar regions=more melt... Climate collapse = Pandemics !

The above image, from an earlier post, shows that the February 2024 temperature was 1.76°C above 1885-1915, potentially 2.75°C above pre-industrial (bright yellow inset right). The image was created by Sam Carana for Arctic-news.blogspot.com with an April 2024 data.giss.nasa.gov screenshot. The red line (6 months Lowess smoothing) highlights the steep rise that had already taken place in early 2023. The image below, created with Climate Reanalyzer content, shows that June 2024 was substantially hotter than June 2023, which is significant since we're not in an El Niño anymore. Moreover, monthly temperatures are also rising. DJ, Governments fail to protect their citizens...pandemics are very strongly linked to climate collapse...In both governments come with empty words, hiding data and censorship... The danger is that feedbacks and further developments will accelerate the temperature rise even more. Critical in this respect is the condition of Arctic sea ice. Arctic sea ice decline The image below, adapted from the Danish Metereological Institute, indicates that Arctic sea ice volume is at a record low for the time of year, as it has been for most of the year. DJ A look at Antarctica; https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,1759.4500.html#lastPost or https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,1759.4500.html#lastPost ; - Extent gain on this day 52k, 16 k less than the average gain on this day (of the last 10 years) of 68k, - Extent gain from minimum on this date is 11.93 million km2, 0.64 million km2, (5.1%) less than the 10 year average of 12.57 million km2. - Extent is 2nd lowest in the 45 year satellite record DJ https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,1760.800.html#lastPost or https://forum.arctic-sea-ice.net/index.php/topic,1760.800.html#lastPost ; It looks like WE are up to losing a big chunk of the tongue soon Glaciers in (West) Antarctica are breaking up...Greenland/Canada/Alaska/Siberia Arctic regions -in general- simply to hot ! Ice can cool a place down...the less ice the less cooling...Hurricanes/storms may bring warm air and rain to the Poles... In many countries temperature 40C+/100F+ ...we have two more warm months to go !
