Deadly heat, deadly floods: Europe | Hajj | China | WION Wideangle

DJ, Links between pandemics and climate collapse may not always be clear. In the video minute 19 bats in India dying from heat....Heat stress not only undermining human health it is also making (wild) animals sick...Resulting in animals moving towards cooler places...however there may not be the food they need...

In the video also Switzerland highway, US railroad, destroyed by floods...Essential infrastructure providing logistics to get food/water to where it is needed.

Here in NL patatoes did rot in the fields because of extreme rain...in other places drought and/or flooding is destroying the harvest.

"Politics" promote wars...not solutions..."Fight migrants" while it is the failing policies causing around a hundred million people to be on the move worldwide...And it are those kept poor paying the highest price...

Temperatures as high as 125°F or 51.67°C are forecast to hit California on July 6, 2024, as illustrated by the image below, adapted from  https://climatereanalyzer.org/ - Climate Reanalyzer  by the University of Maine.

-
There are numerous feedbacks that can further accelerate the temperature rise. Higher temperatures come with more water vapor in the atmosphere, an important feedback since water vapor is also a potent greenhouse gas.

Surface precipitable water reached a record high of 27.139 kg/m² in July 2023, as illustrated by the image below, adapted from  https://psl.noaa.gov/ - NOAA , from an  https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2024/06/have-feedbacks-taken-over.html - earlier post . Worryingly, a value of 26.138 kg/m² was reached in May 2024, much higher than the 25.378 kg/m² in May 2023, which raises fears that surface precipitable water will reach an even higher peak in 2024 than was reached in 2023.
DJ, It can be very cold in some places due to a totally disrupted jet-stream...The big picture however is "beyond alarming"!

Climate collapse = pandemics !

H5N1 did spread even to Antarctica...only Australia/New Zealand so far did not see H5N1 in wild birds...Those birds get eaten by cat/rat like animals also catching H5N1...foxes, swines...

The decline of permafrost results in more meltwater that speeds up the flow of rivers. The image on the right shows sea surface temperatures as high as 18.1°C in the Bering Strait on June 27, 2024.
DJ A look at https://www.ventusky.com/?p=70.7;-34.8;3&l=temperature-2m - https://www.ventusky.com/?p=70.7;-34.8;3&l=temperature-2m or https://www.ventusky.com/?p=70.7;-34.8;3&l=temperature-2m showing +10C on parts of Greenland...

Mountains often have parts made up of rock kept glueed together by ice...If the ice melts parts of the mountain collapses...

DJ, It is the extremes that kill ! Lightning is a major cause for wildfires...In the past those fires did not last long so there was no need to send in firefighters...In more recent years Canada, Russia, US did send in firefighters because the wildfires did get to large-close to oil/gas/military....Air polution of those larger wild fires did kill over 100,000 people in SE Asia a few years ago...those fires were started to clear the land for agriculture...A bad habbit we see in lots of regions kept poor...

Air polution, high humidity and bad (human) health is " a very unwelcome combination"....

And for now we are doing all we can to make it even much worse high speed !

DJ, my view on what is needed;

-Good info on the links between climate collapse and pandemics; inform the people !
-A STOP !!!!! to global travel !!! Only very exceptional long distance travel allowed !

We have to stop spreading diseases via travel....! We have to limit polution, worsening climate disasters the best we can !

The money now ending up making the 0,1% rich even richer (by " not wasting any crisis"-even creating those crises to make profits !) is needed to provide disaster relief worldwide...

NATO should provide aid NOT war !

-Bring "leaders" to trial/court...They do worsen global problems, killing tens of millions of people...If you think hitler, stalin, mao were bad...wake up !

Wars, climate disasters, pandemics since 1990 did kill very likely 50 million people+ and the trend is increasing...

One could claim "learning the hard way"...only there may not be much room for "learning the hard way and surviving it".....

Pandemics, climate, wars are a deathly triangle getting out of control because of bad politics ! Pandemics are NEVER !!!! isolated events !

The effects of climate change on human health are increasingly well studied and quantified. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health#cite_note-:16-1 - [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health#cite_note-:15-2 - [2]  Rising temperatures and changes in weather patterns are increasing the severity of  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_waves - heat waves ,  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_weather - extreme weather  and other causes of illness, injury or death. Heat waves and extreme weather events have a big impact on health both directly and indirectly. In addition to direct impacts, climate change and extreme weather events cause changes in the  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biosphere - biosphere . Certain diseases that are carried by  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disease_vector - vectors  or spread by climate-sensitive  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pathogen - pathogens  may become more common in some regions. Climate change affects human health at all ages, from infancy through adolescence, adulthood and old age. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health#cite_note-Watts2019-7 - [7] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health#cite_note-Romanello2021-3 - [3]  Factors such as age, gender and  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socioeconomic_status - socioeconomic status  influence to what extent these effects become wide-spread risks to human health. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health#cite_note-:8-8 - [8] : 1867  Extreme weather creates  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_hazards - climate hazards  for whole families, particularly those headed by women. It can also reduce the earning capacity and economic stability of people. Populations over 65 years of age are particularly vulnerable to heat and other health effects of climate change. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health#cite_note-Watts2019-7 - [7]  Health risks are unevenly distributed across the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health#cite_note-:8-8 - [8]  Disadvantaged people are particularly  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_change_vulnerability - vulnerable to climate change . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_climate_change_on_human_health#cite_note-Romanello2021-3 - [3] : 15

The health effects of climate change are increasingly a matter of concern for the international public health policy community. This may mean limited time for recovery...some area's may be hit more than once by a major storm this-and maybe-coming-year(s)...

Economic damage; Gulf of Mexico oil/gas, tourism, logistics/storage will increase...
Again-NOT an isolated event;
-Wars since 1990-end of Soviet Union-did cost many trillions...
-Long term health issues and aging mean care-costs may explode...

The economic "challange" is getting too large for a lot of countries. A global reshuffle may be needed...Countries kept poor by the west have a younger population...in countries hit hard by climate collapse they did NOT cause...

Countries with older populations may need "foreign (healthcare) workers"...but they only may come to countries allowing them to bring their families...

Robots can NOT replace all care jobs..."Migrants" are now an issue for "populism-pseudo politicians"...soon countries may compete to get those migrants in...not out !

Climate collapse WILL result in 1-2 billion people need to be moved to places where they can survive...Parts of Asia-Africa and central America see temperatures over 50C...Soon it will be "move or die"....

Latest Five Day Forecast + Last 48h
Wind @ Surface + Total Precipitable Water
Wind @ Surface + 3-hour Precipitation Accumulation
Large GiFS!

An incredible burst of hot, moist air will be blowing in from Scandinavia in a few days from now. I've never seen anything like it. Yesterday that hot air mass wasn't spinning yet (see last image below), but today it did start spinning. I'm curious how fast it will begin to spin in the coming days. So definitely one to follow in the next few days.

And with hot air, comes rain. So I've also added the 3-hour precipitation animation.

DJ, strong storms do bring hot air to polar regions often...

https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2024/07/temperature-rise-threatens-to-accelerate-even-more.html - https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2024/07/temperature-rise-threatens-to-accelerate-even-more.html or https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/2024/07/temperature-rise-threatens-to-accelerate-even-more.html ;

The above image, created with Climate Reanalyzer content, shows that June 2024 was substantially hotter than June 2023, which is significant since we're not in an El Niño anymore. Moreover, monthly temperatures are also rising.

According to  https://climate.copernicus.eu/copernicus-june-2024-marks-12th-month-global-temperature-reaching-15degc-above-pre-industrial - Copernicus , the global-average temperature for the past 12 months (July 2023 – June 2024) has been more than 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average. Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), adds: "June marks the 13th consecutive month of record-breaking global temperatures, and the 12th in a row above 1.5°C with respect to pre-industrial. This is more than a statistical oddity and it highlights a large and continuing shift in our climate." Note that, as discussed in earlier posts, anomalies from a genuinely  https://arctic-news.blogspot.com/p/pre-industrial.html - pre-industrial  base could be much higher.

Arctic sea ice

The danger is that feedbacks and further developments will accelerate the temperature rise even more. Critical in this respect is the condition of Arctic sea ice. The image below, adapted from the  https://ocean.dmi.dk/arctic/icethickness/thk.uk.php - Danish Metereological Institute , indicates that Arctic sea ice volume is at a record low for the time of year, as it has been for most of the year. At the same time, sea ice extent is still relatively large; Arctic sea ice extent was 3% below average in June 2024, close to the values observed most years since 2010, according to  https://climate.copernicus.eu/sea-ice-cover-june-2024 - Copernicus . The implication is that sea ice must be very thin.

-
The amount of energy absorbed by melting ice is as much as it takes to heat an equivalent mass of water from zero to 80°C. Loss of the latent heat buffer threatens to strongly heat up the Arctic Ocean, and this increases the danger that further heat will reach methane hydrates at the seafloor of the Arctic Ocean, causing them to get destabilized resulting in eruption of methane from these hydrates and from free gas underneath that was previously sealed by the hydrates.
DJ, The less ice remains the warmer it will get...stronger storms may transport even more warmth/rain to Polar regions=more melt...

Climate collapse = Pandemics !

The red line (6 months Lowess smoothing) highlights the steep rise that had already taken place in early 2023.

DJ, Governments fail to protect their citizens...pandemics are very strongly linked to climate collapse...In both governments come with empty words, hiding data and censorship...

The danger is that feedbacks and further developments will accelerate the temperature rise even more. Critical in this respect is the condition of Arctic sea ice.

Arctic sea ice decline

JAXA ANTARCTIC SEA ICE EXTENT:  14,020,048 KM2 as at 10-Jul-2024

- Extent gain on this day 52k, 16 k less than the average gain on this day (of the last 10 years) of 68k,
- Extent gain from minimum on this date is 11.93 million km2, 0.64 million km2, (5.1%) less than the 10 year average of 12.57 million km2.

It looks like WE are up to losing a big chunk of the tongue soon
Glaciers in (West) Antarctica are breaking up...Greenland/Canada/Alaska/Siberia Arctic regions -in general- simply to hot !

Ice can cool a place down...the less ice the less cooling...Hurricanes/storms may bring warm air and rain to the Poles...

In many countries temperature 40C+/100F+ ...we have two more warm months to go !

Of course the discussion/idea of "climate collapse" is bad for profits and the politicians they buy...

As temperatures in large parts of the Earth are soaring (cf.  https://www.aljazeera.com/gallery/2024/5/29/photos-north-india-swelters-as-new-delhi-records-highest-ever-temperature-of-49-9c#:~:text=New%20Delhi%20records%20highest%2Dever,Climate%20Crisis%20News%20%7C%20Al%20Jazeera - 52.3°C in Delhi , flames engulf large regions in  https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents - California , tornadoes ravage the Gulf of Mexico states, severe drought starve populations in southern Africa and climate extremes continue to taking over large parts of the Earth.

Much like oncologists advising patients and their families of a terminal illness, so do climate scientists agonizing while reporting the advent of dangerous warming as temperatures rise and tipping points are broken.

But while climate change has become more than evident, there is a heavy price to be paid by those who try to alert the public.

Antarctica is losing ice at an average rate of more than 150 billion tons per year, and Greenland is losing more than 270 billion tons per year, adding to sea level rise. Some glaciologists and Arctic scientists consider the  http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/2014GL061052/abstract - accelerated rate of glacial melt in Greenland and West Antarctica  may result in little remaining ice over these terrains toward the end of the century,  https://theconversation.com/how-to-make-sense-of-alarming-sea-level-forecasts-45655 - leading to sea level rise on the scale of many meters , with catastrophic consequences for coastal and river valley population centres.

The Arctic Ocean  http://agreenroad.blogspot.com.au/2015/01/2015-nasa-finds-amazing-amounts-of.html - contains vast amounts of carbon  accumulated during the Pleistocene ice ages. The greenhouse effect of methane  http://www.onegreenplanet.org/animalsandnature/methane-vs-carbon-dioxide-a-greenhouse-gas-showdown/ - traps up to 100 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide within a 5 year period, and 72 times more within a 20 year period . Atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases – carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide – continued their climb during 2023 according to the latest measurements  https://cires.colorado.edu/news/global-greenhouse-gas-levels-continued-increase-2023 - from NOAA and CIRES scientists . The current CO₂ growth rate threatens an irreversible shift in the state of the Earth climate  https://theconversation.com/what-climate-tipping-points-should-we-be-looking-out-for-27108 - through looming tipping points , including transient cooling events  http://www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/v5/n5/full/nclimate2554.html - induced by flow of cold ice melt water into the oceans from Greenland  and Antarctica;  https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10584-019-02458-x - Glikson (2019) .
DJ...of course climate collapse does cause pandemics... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocene_extinction

In latest news I opened an item on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denialism - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denialism or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denialism ....

Who needs science anyway ?

Here in NL https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_stikstoffuik
is selling very well ! The same "writer" produced also a "book" denying climate collapse...

"We do not want to know"...Do not look up ! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dont_Look_Up - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Look_Up or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Look_Up

...so.."close your eyes and let's imagine there is no climate collapse"....That will work !

There is little evidence that climate science had much of an effect on the outcome of the Paris Agreement. The  https://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-12-13/how-the-1-5-degree-target-overcame-the-odds-in-paris/7024006 - warming target of +1.5°C  has already been breached over the continents or is masked by the  http://www.countercurrents.org/glikson290511.pdf - reflective albedo of transient sulphur aerosols . At the current growth rate of ~3 ppm/year CO₂ will rise closer to the stability threshold of the polar ice sheets.

Little encouragement can be gained from the non-binding promises emerging from climate conferences,  https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/dec/12/james-hansen-climate-change-paris-talks-fraud - which James Hansen described as a “fraud” .

While the implications of the global climate emergency  http://www.greenpeace.org/international/Global/international/planet-2/report/2006/3/an-abrupt-climate-change-scena.pdf - have reached the defence establishment,  the world continues to  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures - spend near to $2.4 trillion each year on the military  instead on the protection of life.

As the portents for a major mass extinction of species are rising – who will defend life on Earth?

How Long Before Earth Becomes Uninhabitable? | Firstpost Earth Let’s talk about Earth, how far it has come and where it is going. So far, Earth is the only planet known to mankind that supports life.

Our planet has nurtured the human race for millions of years. But now, the planet has reached a point of no return because of climate change and global warming.

In this report, we try to understand some of the issues that have gravely affected our planet and with this attempt, we are barely scratching the surface.

We also try to understand how much time we have until the planet becomes uninhabitable. Does this planet have an expiry date.

Pandemics also are related to all kinds of life on the move because of climate collapse..

Arctic:

Average remaining extent loss (of the last 10 years) would produce a minimum in September 2024 of 3.97 million KM2, 0.79 million KM2 above the September 2012 record low minimum of 3.18 million KM2, and 4th lowest in the satellite record

Antarctic:
Average remaining freeze (of the last 10 years) would produce a maximum in Sept 2023 of 16.79 million km2, 0.19 million km2 below the 2023 record low maximum of 16.99 million km2, which would be 1st lowest in the satellite record.
In 10 of the 18 years from 2006 to 2023, gain from now is low enough to produce a new record low maximum

DJ, Polar ice is keeping Earth "cool"...and YES-Earth has seen warmer periods in its history...The problem however is;
-Now there are over 8.1 billion humans living on the planet...the earlier warm periods were "pre-human"...
-The speed of warming is that much faster "life" can not adapt to it...

DJ-We may not understand ALL of climate processes...we should at least understand we have become very vulnerable...A volcanic eruption in Antarctica could even speed up glacier break down there...Linear models may ignore "extreme events" that can bring much more damage high speed..

Large pieces of sea ice are breaking away from the northern tip of Greenland, to be carried by ocean currents to the Fram Strait east of Greenland. On their way they will melt away, illustrating how ocean heat can make even the thickest parts of the sea ice disappear in a matter of days.

The thick sea ice north of Greenland is breaking away due to high ocean heat and due to strong wind blowing from Greenland toward the North Pole, which is in turn due to deformation of the Jet Stream, one of the many feedbacks of the temperature rise.

26 July 2024

SMB gain to date is 427GT, 21GT (5%) below the 2017-2022 average of 448GT, and very close to the longterm average from DMI.

N.B. SMB is now reducing as run-off from melt exceeds precipitation.

Daily Melt remains at extreme levels for the time of year.

Until this day (26 July) daily SMB loss was mostly above average in July.
