DJ-How to define a "pandemic" may be related to excess deaths...Hong Kong Flu (1968) and Asian Flu (1957) both may have seen up to 4 million deaths. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_epidemics_and_pandemics or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_epidemics_and_pandemics With CoViD there has been a discussion on "from" CoViD or "with" CoViD ...excess deaths-by now- may not give a clear view. Lots of people may die AFTER a CoViD infection but because of CoViD damage in all parts of the body...Even flu-deaths very likely will be higher because of CoViD... < aria-label="Grok s" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> < aria-expanded="false" aria-haspopup="menu" aria-label="More" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" -testid="caret" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> Me in September: "Covid infection damages the body and immune system, so following the terrible summer covid wave, we're going to have a terrible winter for other infections"
Them in September: <crickets>
Them in the winter: "Why is flu hitting people so badly?" DJ, The basic problem is denialism..."saving economy" ... https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-56428-2 or https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-025-56428-2 ; Our results of impaired mitochondrial function and skeletal muscle myopathy in Long COVID patients are in line with other recent publications4,5,10,11,12. The causal role of deconditioning in explaining skeletal muscle adaptations in Long COVID is impossible to ascertain from our study design, as we acknowledged in the paper. We do not know the underlying factors contributing to these changes, and as good scientific practice, we refrained from drawing causal relationships in our publication. We were therefore surprised to read that Saris et al. drew such conclusions based on work which was not set up to be causal in nature. Recently, we and others described many possible factors contributing to Long COVID symptomology, including viral persistence, immune cell and autonomous nervous system dysregulation, and auto-immunity5,12,13,14. - Dutch research warns that exercise may worsen post-exertional malaise (PEM) in LongCovid.
PEM is not just a way to reduce your fitness, and intense activity is not a cure. DJ, If there is damage caused by viral disease and/or the virus still is in the body trying to "maximize condition" may do harm...

https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/02/usda-adds-new-species-black-rats-to.html or https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/02/usda-adds-new-species-black-rats-to.html ;
Presumably only a small percentage of HPAI H5 infected mammalian wildlife are ever found and tested, but this week the USDA's list has reached a milestone of sorts, surpassing 500 entries. Four of the ten entries added this week are feline (3 house cats, 1 bobcat), while a new species - the Black Rat (n=4) - makes its first appearance. House cats were only first added to the list in May of 2024, and since then 89 have been added. Other felines (bobcats, mountain lions, tigers, etc.) add more than 5 dozen more to the list. Rodents, were first added in June of last year, and now (deer mouse, house mouse, black rat) make up > 20% of the the list (n=108).
The USDA's list is far from exhaustive, since many states have reported zero - or only a few - infections. Reporting is often limited by animals dying in remote and difficult to access places, or by animals that survive the infection.
Not so very long ago, HPAI H5 was pretty much just an avian virus, with only occasional spillovers to humans and a few cats unlucky enough to be fed a diet of raw chicken. But starting in 2021 we began to see reports of numerous spillovers into a much wider range of mammals As the HPAI H5 virus continues to find new mammalian hosts it is likely to become more deeply entrenched in our shared ecology, increasing the risks that it will find new evolutionary pathways that were unavailable to it when it was primarily a disease of birds. Meaning that even if we somehow manage to control this virus in the henhouse and the dairy, it could still deliver a nasty surprise down the road. DJ, Very likely CoViD is also still spreading in HUNDREDS of species...so both H5N1 and CoViD "can do without human hosts"....Since all kinds of flu is also in lots of mammals all kinds of mixes are possible/likely...The H5N1-problems only just begun... |

The Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FAVV) confirmed the news on Tuesday. This follows five earlier cases detected among hobby poultry keepers. - "The number of infections in wild birds has increased in recent weeks," said FAVV spokeswoman Hélène Bonte. "This indicates the presence of the virus in Belgium and poses a serious risk to poultry kept outdoors. We strongly advise owners to protect their birds from wild species, for example by covering enclosures with netting". Infected wild animals Infections in wildlife were already recorded in Belgium this year, including a dead goose and a sick swan in the province of Limburg, as well as a buzzard, a grey heron and two seagulls on the coast. - In recent years, avian influenza has spread to six continents, affecting at least 485 species of birds and around 50 species of mammals, including polar bears, seals, dolphins and even captive tigers. Kennedy Jr. takes control of the Trump Administration’s Department of Health and Human Services, many doctors are sounding the alarm about several U.S. public health crises — a flu season that’s the most intense in more than a decade; measles outbreaks; and a simmering bird flu that, if it mutates and can be spread human-to-human, could make “COVID look like a walk in the park.” And there’s another illness — linked to the flu but dangerously unreported — that is leading to tragic outcomes in children. Dr. Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota, in an appearance on Deadline: White House with MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on Tuesday, warned that the flu has sparked “a serious condition called acute necrotizing encephalitis,” and that the Center for Disease Control, under orders from President Donald Trump, has not released critical information about it. “Right now in this country, there is a major challenge occurring with children developing influenza and then developing a condition called acute necrotizing encephalitis,” Osterholm said. “Have you seen a word come out of the CDC about this? They’ve been prohibited from even putting this kind of information out. This is critical information for parents to know. “This is a serious brain complication of influenza infection for which there are many cases out there right now occurring, parents should know about this. So if they have children who have these signs and symptoms, get them into the hospital, or at least the emergency room, as soon as possible. That’s the kind of thing that is very, very hard for us ... where we know we can do things to make it better, and we’re not given that opportunity.” Osterholm listed the symptoms. “Your children have influenza-like symptoms to begin with,” he said. “That’s how it starts — the fever, the muscle aches, the chills. But then there’s a certain lethargy. Meaning [there is a] certain tiredness, a lack of consciousness, where it’s very hard to arouse the children. Those are the symptoms, and when they appear, you need to seek medical care immediately." Pediatric deaths, possibly linked to vaccine denying, “are climbing dramatically in this country with this flu season,” Osterholm said. “Parents need to understand those and [the Trump CDC is] not [publicizing] that right now. We’re not sharing that with them. And I think that’s a huge, huge mistake. “We know anecdotally that there are situations around the country where we have 12 children hospitalized in Boston, 10 children hospitalized at Stanford and many other locations around the country, and the media is not covering it, and nor is CDC. And this is something we can do something about, if parents understand this is occurring now and get their children in early. This surely can be a major step in helping to reduce the risk of serious illness and deaths.” New York Times Health Policy reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg, also appearing in the segment, said she is concerned about “a bird flu outbreak that could be very, very serious.” DJ, Diseases often see co-infections...making risks grow

DJ, Very limited "new news"...As if the US stopping information is welcomed by lots of other countries to also cut information...
https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/02/canada-phac-announces-plans-to-purchase.html or https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/02/canada-phac-announces-plans-to-purchase.html ;As concerns over the evolution and spread of the HPAI H5 virus increase, countries around the world have begun to purchase varying amounts of pre-pandemic H5 vaccines for their populations. Some of these vaccines are based on older strains of the virus, while others are based on more recent strains. Whether - or how closely - they will match any emerging pandemic strain is unknown, which is why most countries have elected to purchase only enough for high-risk individuals. DJ, H1N1 may share the N1-part with H5N1...so "the hope" is present flu vaccines/immunity may limit risks...There must be hundreds of US H5N1 cases-however in general-so far-mild. Only a few very serious cases-in people that already had underlying problems... - NL statistics see CoViD cases (very) low, flu a problem...8,5% of workers reported sick last week...It has not been this high since 2021... < aria-label="Grok s" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> < aria-expanded="false" aria-haspopup="menu" aria-label="More" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" -testid="caret" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> DJ, Measles seems to become a global problem...(may even go for older age people-beside children-with CoViD immunity damage. Maybe my view on "events"...
1-The major global story is climate collapse & pandemics. Both see the same reaction; denial. So both problems may become much worse with increasing speed. Measles has a very high R0-so if CoViD undermined immunity measles could go on a global tour...ON TOP of lots of other diseases. NL excess deaths in the last 5 years may have been 5-10% above the "normal" before that. Switching from base-lines/definitions-like seen in climate change (pre-industrial now 1900 ???so ignoring 1C temperature rise to keep statistics at 1,5C+...but "we need to see a long term average" insanity...)- putting the "economy=profits" as the only priority... I hope to be very wrong but both climate collapse and pandemic collapse may become part of "an end to civilization"...From a history point of view both factors played a major role in ending the (West) Roman Empire a.o. 2-Both the Korean and Chinese civil wars were frozen...Taiwan and China both claim to be China...North and South Korea both have reunification as a major goal. On that background was Japan colonization/occupation. Korea, Taiwan (Formosa-some see it as the most northern island of the Philippines) were Japanese colonies from the 19th century till 1945. (Northern) Ireland, Cyprus (Turkish & Greek part) may be similar questions-however not in a "cold war setting". Exploiting conflicts to get a foothold, bridgehead, may get a party pulled into a conflict (Middle East). So some distance may help to find long term constructive answers... 3-Protectionism -on the long run- does NOT work. A very major problem for the US is its debts...Import tariffs could be part of a plan to restore trade balances...diplomacy should be the leading factor. I do not see ANY real diplomacy from the trumpf-team... Bernie Sanders is much too old to become US president-but may play a very major role NOW ! Defining alternatives and goals...start a "healing process" because trumpf is a symptom of "socio-economic disease". (Polarization is another aspect of that...there has to be room for different views in a democracy). 4-We need bridge builders to avoid terrorism, civil war etc. In some aspects we may be in a sort of replay of the late 1960's Massive social unrest both in North America and Europe did bring us close to (Civil) war (at home)... DOGE/trumpf & co however may now do that much damage to the US the US does not need a foreign enemy...A reason we may have better public health in many European countries is mass disease in the 19th century and before...Some Europeans did go to the Americas to get away from European crisis...A lot of social laws in their basics started 1n the 1870's...The US had a smaller population and just recovered slowly from its (very devastating) "civil" (in part UK funded) war. Russia, China, Iran do NOT have a "democratic tradition". https://en. It would be welcome to see "modernization" in the US presidential/political election system. The UNSC needs to reform...UK, France still IN the security council, India, Indonesia, Brazil NOT permanent members underlines an unwillingness of the west to modernize...The "uni-polar"/western domination rules "order" is over... Global priority has to be climate/pandemics...and that is a very big job we hardly started doing.. DJ

The alternative for culling is seeing farm birds getting sick and dying...More and more a reality...We had to decrease farm animals/meat production-consumption long ago-a.o. because of bio security... Like with climate collapse we kicked the can down the road... We may no longer see much-if any-info on H5 crisis in the US...egg prices, meat prices may give a hint of reality...Excess deaths, labor shortage, overloaded healthcare will be other statistics to watch.

The outlook took a turn for the worse in 2021 when birds brought the virus from Europe to America, mirroring 2014, when Asian migratory flocks sparked widespread outbreaks in the United States and Canada. Both these events led to mass infection of domestic poultry and resulted in the culling of millions of chickens. But the outbreaks that began in 2021 and continue to this day have an additional feature: This time, mammals like seals and big cats have also been infected in large numbers, turning up dead on beaches, in zoos, and elsewhere. Last year proved to be yet another inflection point for the virus when it was detected in hundreds of US cattle herds and in workers who managed them. By now it’s clear there’s no reason for optimism that H5N1 will fade away as a minor nuisance. To the contrary, the situation has only been trending worse. With many signs pointing to a future flu pandemic, the keys to getting in front of it will be ensuring a free flow of data that can provide early warning and boosting the resources for testing widely and analyzing H5N1’s genetic evolution. That needs to happen both globally and domestically—but at a critical juncture, President Donald Trump has instead pulled the United States back from international health efforts, compounding his misstep by targeting domestic health agency communications, capacities, and budgets. The chances are increasing that the world will miss an opportunity to address a potential pandemic before it begins. DJ, Bad example is followed by others...lots of countries may think twice before spreading outbreak info... After the inauguration, the administration prevented the publication of the CDC’s vaunted Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, which had boasted an unblemished record of regular publication for decades, even after presidential transitions. The first post-inauguration edition reportedly was to contain studies on H5N1. When publication resumed, they weren’t included (although one has since published, showing a risk of infection for veterinarians working with infected animals). Since then, data has been trickling out from multiple sources. Earlier this month, the Department of Agriculture revealed a second strain of H5N1 had jumped from birds into three dairy herds in Nevada. The jump involved the more lethal strain D1.1 strain, which has mutations that could make the virus spread more easily in mammals, as opposed to the milder B3.13 strain which has been infecting herds since last summer. The Nevada cows didn’t have symptoms when they were tested, but early detection by the Nevada Department of Agriculture’s milk testing program allowed officials to quarantine affected herds and thereby contain the spread of infection. - With the more dangerous D1.1 strain now predominating among North American migratory birds, what happened in Nevada—the second documented transfer of H5N1 from birds to cattle—comes as no surprise. Surprises, however, could be on the horizon with this virus if testing of non-symptomatic people and animals continues to be inadequate, particularly as the Trump administration restricts US global cooperation and the data flowing from the US and international organizations that identify infections and viral evolution slows to a trickle or comes to a complete stop. DJ, One may fall back on statistic models/scenarios on how viruses do spread...Canada will detect D1.1-A-H5N1 soon enough...the scale may indicate the crisis (in the US)... With the cases of birds and mammals infected with the virus continuing to explode, the appearance of a transmissible pandemic strain is not “If,” but “when.” To quote Michael Osterholm, the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota: “The pandemic clock is ticking. We just don’t know what time it is.” DJ, However we DO KNOW it is time to ACT NOW !!!

Five months ago a new genotype of H5N1 appeared in Canada and the Pacific Northwest - dubbed D1.1 - which very quickly became dominant in wild birds and quickly swept eastward across the United States and Canada.
Recently, genotype D1.1 has been detected in dairy cattle in two states (Nevada & Arizona), further raising concerns over its ability to infect mammals.
Normally, we only see this mutation appear in a small percentage (1%) of patients receiving antiviral treatment. Because it is thought to exact a `fitness penalty' on influenza A viruses - limiting forward transmission - H275Y in the `wild' is fairly rare. But, as the following blogs indicate, it is not entirely unheard of: And in 2008, defying all expectations - H275Y became `fixed' in seasonal H1N1 - rendering Tamiflu all but useless against that subtype (see CIDRAP article With H1N1 resistance, CDC changes advice on flu drugs).
While we've not seen any reports of H275Y in D1.1 samples collected in the United States, last November the CDC did report finding a far-less impactful mutation (NA-S247N) in 3 poultry workers from Washington State, which they stated may slightly reduce the virus's susceptibility to antivirals.
DJ, The H275Y mutation may result in "better" (for the virus) spread... < aria-label="Grok s" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> < aria-expanded="false" aria-haspopup="menu" aria-label="More" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" -testid="caret" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> JUST IN: HNL Lab Medicine will begin subtyping all positive influenza A samples from hospitalized patients to detect H5N1 bird flu - < aria-label="Grok s" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> < aria-expanded="false" aria-haspopup="menu" aria-label="More" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" -testid="caret" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> Pennsylvania: Lehigh Valley health care officials are preparing for human cases of bird flu DJ, my NON-expert take on it; H5N1 by now is very likely to be spreading H2H (human to human) in the US. Wild birds may transport SEVERAL types of H5N1 (etc) further around the globe... Given the CoViD immunity damage we are moving ever closer to an "avian flu pandemic". The WHO may decide on a Public Health Emergency of International Concern...close to "pandemic" status...We may reach that point within a few months ?
