Tata Steel is about to announce a massive reorganization in which it will cut almost one in five jobs to save costs, insiders told the news wire ANP. That amounts to 1,800 people facing layoffs.
According to the news wire, Tata Steel staff have been told that an important announcement will be made today. A spokesperson for the steel factory in IJmuiden refused to comment.
Tata Steel is facing major financial headwinds and had to https://nltimes.nl/2024/11/22/tata-steel-announces-another-eu60-million-cutbacks-ijmuiden-factory - announce two major cutbacks last year due to cash flow problems. Trump threatens with tariffs, Zutphen winegrower feels it immediately
ZUTPHEN - "The containers were already ready in Spain," says wine merchant Derrick Neleman from Zutphen. "But now they are coming back to our warehouse, because exports to America have come to a standstill." Due to the announced import duties from the United States, his wine is in danger of losing the American market — and with it years of work.
Wine merchant Derrick Neleman from Zutphen has a problem. His company, Neleman Organic Vineyards, sells organic, vegan wine made on a vineyard in Spain. From his warehouse in Zutphen, he sells wine in the Netherlands through his webshop. It is located in various supermarkets and specialty shops. From Spain, the wine is exported to about thirty countries. Until recently, this included the United States. That export has now come to a standstill.
"The containers were ready to be shipped in Spain, but now they are coming to our warehouse in Zutphen," says Neleman. The cause? Due to Donald Trump's announced import duties, American buyers are canceling their orders from the winegrower. "That's really annoying."
What are import duties?
Import duties make products from abroad more expensive. Companies that buy these products have to pay additional taxes, and those costs are often passed on to the customer. It will then become cheaper to make products in your own country.
US President Donald Trump has already introduced import duties on steel and aluminium, to which the European Union (EU) responded with its own import duties on American products. This creates a trade war: countries make it difficult for each other with extra taxes on each other's products.
A basic levy of 10 percent applies to all countries. But some countries are getting a little bit more. At the EU, there is sometimes another 10 percent on top of that.
'Idiotic policy'
For the past three years, Neleman has invested in the American market, even the export director has moved to the United States. "That takes time and energy," says Neleman. "If nothing or little goes that way now, you have thrown away three years." There are also mixed messages from their American trade relations. "They are also at a loss, because they have also invested in us for three years. But they cannot and do not want to pass on those huge levies to the customer," says Neleman.
"Trump is a blessing for my profession," says Albert de Vaal, senior lecturer in international economics at Radboud University. "But from an economic perspective, this is completely ridiculous. Trump is just pursuing idiotic policies." Trump himself says that he mainly wants to protect American producers, but he does not succeed in this way, says De Vaal. "American companies also often use parts from other countries for their production, which also increases their costs." This affects not only companies that supply directly to America, but the entire production chain.
What does the customer notice in the wallet?
Those higher costs will not be too bad for now, De Vaal thinks. So what will the EU customer notice in his wallet from these high rates? Not that much yet, according to De Vaal. "The great thing is that the European Union has not yet taken any countermeasures, so products from America still arrive at about the same import tariffs. Those rates are usually low, on average 4 to 5 percent."
However, as a consumer you may pay more than before: "For example, if you order a table from America that is assembled with screws imported from China, those screws have become more expensive. Then your table can also cost more.

Attempting to displace China in global supply chain a double-edged sword for India

In recent years, India has maintained strict restrictions on Chinese investments, a trend that seems unlikely to change anytime soon. According to a recent report in The Times of India, the Indian government is unlikely to ease checks on investments from China despite growing calls to review the foreign direct investment norms.
This reluctance stems from India's wariness of capital flows from across the border, heightened by the trade war between the US and China. Under the Trump administration, the US-imposed tariffs on Chinese goods have further reinforced India's concerns about the growing influence of Chinese companies. At the same time, India appears determined to take advantage of the tariffs imposed on China by attracting foreign investors to relocate their supply chains to India.
This strategy is part of India's broader objective to reduce its dependence on Chinese imports, foster its domestic manufacturing sector and establish itself as a key player in the global supply chain. While such ambitions may seem logical, their execution has been problematic. The increasing scrutiny and restrictions on Chinese companies, coupled with attempts to position India as an alternative to China, have created a highly antagonistic business environment that harms both sides.
It is essential to understand that, no matter how actively India attempts to lure foreign investment, its manufacturing industries remain heavily reliant on China's advanced supply chain and technology base.
China has spent decades building an unrivaled manufacturing ecosystem characterized by scale, efficiency and expertise. Therefore, India's strategy of unfairly targeting Chinese investments and attempting to displace China in the global supply chain is a double-edged sword.
India's scrutiny of Chinese companies has often been justified in the name of national security; however, it has created significant disruptions that ripple through its own economy. The ban on various Chinese mobile apps and the targeting of Chinese tech companies, for example, have deprived Indian consumers of high-quality, affordable products while reducing market competition.
In its efforts to establish manufacturing independence, India continues to depend on the resources, technology and expertise it seeks to displace. As foreign companies look to relocate their factories to India, they remain deeply reliant on the upstream technology and components supplied by Chinese manufacturers. Senior engineers and technical specialists, many of whom have been trained in China or work with Chinese firms, are essential to ensuring the success of these relocation projects.
If India wishes to become a global manufacturing hub, it must re-evaluate its current policies toward Chinese investments and businesses. A policy of exclusion not only harms bilateral economic relations but also undermines India's own goals of improving its global competitiveness. Creating a hostile environment for Chinese companies sends the wrong message to foreign investors who benefit from China's supply chain efficiency and technological resources.
By making India aware of its dependence on Chinese supply chains, China can encourage India to adopt a more pragmatic and cooperative stance. Both nations can realize their fullest economic potential only by shifting toward partnership rather than opposition.

DJ, The US NEEDS to import some products it is unable to produce (enough) itself...from coffee, some sorts of pharma to Russian uranium, special sorts of oil [url]https://halturnerradioshow.com/index.php/news-selections/national-news/keystone-oil-pipeline-shutdown-could-quickly-lead-to-higher-gasoline-prices[//url] or steel..
Tariffs war may end up weakening the US global position even more...
India and China are in competition. India is now #1 in population, China slowly moving towards a decrease of its population (still China has over 4x the number of people per km2 then the US has).
In GDP-PPP China is #1, US-#2, India moving towards #3 (and Russia #4)...If one would include the EU the EU would be the #2-after China.
DenmarK is pushing for a boycott of US products because of the Greenland -trump phantasy...Canada may export oil, raw materials, products to Asia and Europe...with even limited "suggestions" of Canada even joining the EU.
Part of the trade war is the position of the US$ as global reserve currency...So far both the UK and EU accepted the US$ as currency for energy deals...even at the cost of their own currencies. This also soon may end...
The EU/UK sticks to "war with Russia" but has to import energy...Africa/West Asia may offer lower prices then the US energy trade can offer...(and in part pipelines may be used for transport). But both African countries and Asia may NOT use the US$...
The Euro-in reaction to trump-tariff-agression- may increase its role as part of currencies replacing the US$ in international trade.
-
The US has a trade defecit because it buys more then it sells...imports more then exports. And lots of countries were selling goods & services to the US on credit...
It is a US policy-for decades-to "buy on credit" in US$ all over the world to "enforce" the US$ as a global currency...The US did this to itself...
Leaders willing to sell oil/energy outside the petro-dollar were killed by NATO/US wars...
As long as the US could enforce its rules on "trading partners" there was no problem for the US...a lot of countries were kept poor by "the (neo-colonial) west"...

Our silence is violent
Gandhiji called poverty a moral collapse of society, and he believed its roots lie in what he called the seven social evils. He named them wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, worship without sacrifice, and politics without principles. Let us keep in mind, Gandhiji wrote this in 1925.
And indeed, what is poverty but a passive form of violence? A chronic abuse of human dignity that strips away a person's humanity, and corrodes the human spirit? When a woman does back-breaking work for ten hours a day but cannot feed her family with her earnings, society has scorned her labour. When construction workers build housing complexes but they remain homeless and migrants, society has snatched away their right to safety and a sense of belonging. When a woman dies in childbirth, society shows no regard for her life. When a farmer grows food for the world, but goes hungry himself, society is callous. Such are the ways in which society gives its social consent to let the situation continue. For this reason, I say that our silence is violent. Our looking the other way is a form of consent. It is our moral failure that we still tolerate poverty.
DJ, A billionaire class buying politics, press, science is NOT freedom, is NOT democracy but it is slavery and exploitation...

European Union member states agree to counter-tariffs on U.S. products
This article will be updated.
The European Union member states have agreed on import tariffs for a list of American products, the European Commission has reported. This is in response to the 25 percent import tax on steel and aluminum that the U.S. implemented last month.
The tariffs vary from 10 to 25 percent and apply to thousands of products, including motorbikes, soja beans, and beauty products. American whiskey was on the list originally, but this was then taken off the list due to fears for severe counter tariffs on European alcohol.
The first import tariffs come into effect from April 15. “These countermeasures can be suspended at any time, should the U.S. agree to a fair and balanced negotiated outcome,” a statement from the European Commission read.
If the U.S. does not respond, then most of the import tariffs will come into effect midway through May. The tariffs on all the products on the list will be implemented from December. Altogether, the tariffs are good for a fee of 21 billion euros, European Union sources have said.
The European Union has not taken any countermeasures against American import tariffs on cars or the https://nltimes.nl/2025/04/03/trump-announces-20-tariff-hike-eu-dutch-businesses-mps-concerned - general import tariffs of 20 percent . The European Commission is expected to present a proposition about this at the beginning of next week, which the member states will vote on.
The Commission continues to emphasize the willingness to negotiate with the U.S. and that the import tariffs are in “nobody’s best interest.

In that poll 51% of the audience wants (supports) EU tariffs on US imports, 28% against it, 21% "neutral/do not know"...Also the DK/Danish idea of supermarkets making clear where the products come from is supported-so people can boycott Us (or israel/other) goods..
DJ-Very likely trump will now react by increasing tariffs on the EU...making the trade war/relations even worse...
BRICS+ will be watching for oppertunities to increase trade with Europe. From Algeria/Nigeria energy to Egyptian vegetables, Latin American products...China, India also may show a willingness to increase trade...(in part via railways that already link via TIP the EU with India/China (Türkiye-Iran-Pakistan=TIP landbridge).
