DJ, The US is reporting several outbreaks of measles this year (a.o. in Texas). Europe had some reports from Central Europe; Wintersports however may bring spread...
https://nltimes.nl/2025/02/26/multiple-measles-reports-helmond-primary-school - https://nltimes.nl/2025/02/26/multiple-measles-reports-helmond-primary-school or https://nltimes.nl/2025/02/26/multiple-measles-reports-helmond-primary-school ; https://www.ggdbzo.nl/nieuws/mazelen-op-een-basisschool-in-helmond/ - GGD Brabant-Zuidoost has received multiple reports of children with measles at a primary school in Helmond. The health service urged anyone with symptoms to stay home, especially during carnival where a virus can spread quickly among the many attendees.
Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease. The virus that causes it spreads through coughing, sneezing, and talking. Symptoms start with a fever, cough, and red eyes. Three to seven days later, a rash develops, typically starting behind the ears and then spreading over the body. It can take 7 to 18 days after first contact with the virus to start showing symptoms.
In the Netherlands, children are vaccinated against measles with the MMR vaccine in the National Vaccination Program. “Vaccinated people and people who have already had measles are well protected against the disease,” the GGD said. But it is still possible that you can get the disease. Parents of children who have missed their MMR jabs can contact the GGD to organize a catch-up vaccination.
Measles usually heals on its own but can sometimes make people seriously ill. Babies, unvaccinated pregnant women, and people with low immunity are at extra risk of becoming seriously ill from measles.
Last week, the public health institute RIVM reported https://nltimes.nl/2025/02/07/number-measles-cases-increased-january-national-outbreak-yet - 34 confirmed cases of measles in the first weeks of 2025, considerably more than in the same period last year. The western parts of Noord-Brabant and the Amsterdam region had the most cases, relative to population size. In March 2024, there was an official https://nltimes.nl/2024/03/14/measles-outbreak-hits-eindhoven-schools-14-young-children-adult-infected - measles outbreak at Eindhoven schools .
DJ, Again...is 2025 an "active measles year" or is it not that abnormal ?

Measles can cause pneumonia and encephalitis, which can be fatal. Pneumonia occurs in 6% of measles cases and is the most common cause of death. Neurologic infection is rare, occurring in only 1 out of 1000 measles cases, but with a much higher risk of permanent harm including death.

Most people survive measles, though in some cases, complications may occur. About 1 in 4 individuals will be hospitalized and 1–2 in 1,000 will die. Complications are more likely in children under age 5 and adults over age 20.

Earlier today, in https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2025/02/la-county-public-health-confirms.html - L.A. County Public Health Confirms Measles Case, we looked at the recent imported case in Los Angeles, the ongoing outbreak in Texas, and discussed how serious measles infection can be; particularly in children.
Sadly, today we have further evidence of the harm from this disease with the following announcement from the Texas DHHS on a school-aged child's death from the virus.
I'll have a postscript after the break.
https://www.dshs.texas.gov/news-alerts/texas-announces-first-death-measles-outbreak - Texas announces first death in measles outbreak News Release February 26, 2025
The Texas Department of State Health Services is reporting the first death from measles in the ongoing outbreak in the South Plains and Panhandle regions. The school-aged child who was not vaccinated was hospitalized in Lubbock last week and tested positive for measles.
As of Feb. 25, 124 cases of measles have been confirmed in the outbreak since late January. Most of the cases are in children. Eighteen people have been hospitalized over the course of the outbreak.
-
https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/measles - The WHO reports that the number of measles related deaths have fallen 80% over the past 25 years - and that vaccines have prevented 60 million related deaths. But even so, more than 100,000 people die from the infection every year, and many more suffer long-term sequelae.
While not the scourge that is was during most of the 20th century, measles remains a serious public health threat in much of the world, and is only held at bay in developed countries by relatively high vaccination rates.
A barrier that can be easily overcome if vaccination rates continue to fall.
DJ, Again...the combination of diseases may make diognosis harder and result in more severe disease

We’re watching a preventable disaster in slow motion.
Measles is surging, kids are getting hospitalized, and unless something changes, more will die.

Measles is a looming disaster.
Airborne and highly contagious, it spreads faster than Bird Flu or even COVID-19.
With an R₀ of 12–18, a single case can trigger explosive outbreaks.
This virus has real pandemic potential.
Vaccinate now before it’s too late.
I’m getting concerning reports out of Ontario.
Families with multiple measles cases keeping sick kids at home, assuming it’ll pass.
Only seeking care when it’s too late.
Hey friends
Measles isn’t just a rash and fever.
Even a mild case wipes out years of acquired immunity.
A gateway to severe illness long after recovery.
Measles - Canada
Measles is actively spreading in Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph.

How big is the real number?

Faced with the increase in measles cases worldwide and the epidemic currently affecting Morocco, health authorities are asking health professionals to pay particular attention to patients traveling to a country where measles is circulating. The Regional Health Agency also recommends that users check their vaccination status and, if necessary, get vaccinated.
A resurgence in France and the region, with an ongoing epidemic in Morocco
In November 2024, the https://www.who.int/fr/news/item/14-11-2024-measles-cases-surge-worldwide--infecting-10.3-million-people-in-2023 - World Health Organization observed an increase in measles cases worldwide. Measles is circulating particularly in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.
In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, only one case was reported in 2021, compared to 73 in 2023 and 139 in 2024. Most of the clustered cases in the region originated from an unvaccinated traveler returning from a stay in a country affected by measles (Dubai, India, Romania, etc.).
17 cases have been reported in the region since the beginning of the year .
In recent months, an epidemic has been particularly raging in Morocco. However, since January 2025, French health authorities have observed a https://professionnels.vaccination-info-service.fr/Toutes-les-actualites/Epidemie-de-rougeole-au-Maroc-recommandations-aux-voyageurs-et-mesures-de-precautions-pour-les-professionnels-de-sante - Measles, a disease to be taken seriously
Measles is a highly contagious disease: in the absence of preventive measures, one patient can infect up to 20 people.
It can lead to severe complications (respiratory, neurological) which may require hospitalization , leave after-effects , or even cause death .
Since the disease is transmitted through the air, adults, like children, can come into contact with the measles virus in many circumstances: at daycare, at school, at work, during indoor activities, in a waiting room, etc.
Given the resurgence of cases worldwide, certain destinations may also prove particularly risky.
Vaccination remains the best protection against severe forms
Vaccination is mandatory for children born since January 1 , 2018 : 1st injection at 12 months and 2nd injection at 16-18 months. To be well protected against measles, everyone born since 1980 must have received 2 doses of vaccine. Before 1980, measles was common in France: people born before this date therefore have a high probability of having contracted this disease and of being immune. People born after 1980 and/or parents are therefore invited to check their vaccinations and those of their children , by identifying one of the vaccine names below in the vaccination record:
Monovalent measles vaccine: Rouvax®
Bivalent vaccine against measles + rubella: Rudi-Rouvax®
In the event of non-vaccination or incomplete vaccination , you should consult a doctor or pharmacist quickly, with your health record.
Recommendations for healthcare professionals
The Ministry of Health has alerted health professionals to this situation so that they can:
Check the vaccination status of their patients.
Apply the specific recommendations for patients planning to travel to a country where measles is circulating - or returning, namely the administration of a dose of MMR vaccine. It is recommended for:
Infants from 6 months of age: these children will subsequently need to receive two doses of trivalent MMR vaccine according to the vaccination schedule (1 dose at 12 months of age, then one dose between 16 and 18 months)
people born before 1980 who are not protected against measles : with no known history of measles or not previously vaccinated.
Measles is a https://www.auvergne-rhone-alpes.ars.sante.fr/maladies-declaration-obligatoire-declaration-et-gestion-des-signalements-par-lars - notifiable disease , which requires special treatment as soon as it is suspected. There are usually 10 to 20 patients a year. Many of these have been in a country where measles is more common. There is an epidemic about once every 10 to 15 years. When that happens, measles is most likely to spread in areas where fewer people are vaccinated. The last measles outbreak in the Netherlands was in 2013/2014. During that outbreak, more than 180 measles patients were admitted to hospital. One 17-year-old girl died of the consequences of measles. No, a person with measles cannot go to children, school or work. If you suspect that your child has measles, keep the child at home and call the GP.

Update 5 February 2025
In 2025, there have been 26 cases of measles reported by Municipal Public Health Services (GGDs) in various regions of the Netherlands. Most involve patients who contracted measles in another country, and their contacts (who are often unvaccinated). There is no national outbreak of measles at this time.
In 2024, there were more than 200 reported cases of measles in the Netherlands in total. There were four larger clusters, each of which gradually subsided. This is because the majority of the Dutch population is protected against measles – either by vaccination, or because they have already had measles.
DJ, So 26 measles cases in 2025-till february 5 update-with a "normal" of 10-20 measles cases per year in NL is "above the norm"...

On February 21, 2025, the CDC reissued a Level 1, Practice Usual Precautions, alert for 57 countries. This CDC list does not integrate the Region of the Americas, with numerous countries reporting 537 measles outbreaks this year.
DJ, the "travel map" has measles in Europe, Africa, Asia...So with also lots of cases in North America...YES...we may be in a measles-pandemic...

Vaccines are NOT perfect-but they may be "the best available option"...
Going for "natural immunity"= S T U P I D !!!!!

DJ, Measles is a major problem in the US, Canada...
https://nltimes.nl/2025/03/20/measles-outbreak-amsterdam-school-16-children-test-positive-4-hospitalized - https://nltimes.nl/2025/03/20/measles-outbreak-amsterdam-school-16-children-test-positive-4-hospitalized or https://nltimes.nl/2025/03/20/measles-outbreak-amsterdam-school-16-children-test-positive-4-hospitalized ;
Measles outbreak at Amsterdam school: 16 children test positive, 4 hospitalized
A measles outbreak at an elementary school in Nieuw-West has infected 16 children, with four requiring hospitalization, the GGD Amsterdam confirmed Thursday. All four hospitalized children have since been discharged, https://www.at5.nl/artikelen/231590/mazelen-basisschool-nieuw-west-16-kinderen-amsterdam - according to AT5.
The outbreak, https://nltimes.nl/2025/03/19/measles-clusters-hit-primary-schools-amsterdam-rotterdam-hague-eindhoven - first reported Wednesday , reportedly originated from a child who contracted the virus abroad. Though that child does not attend the affected school, they infected siblings who do, leading to rapid spread within the school community.
GGD-physician Charlie van der Weijden https://www.at5.nl/artikelen/231590/mazelen-basisschool-nieuw-west-16-kinderen-amsterdam - noted that an additional case has been confirmed, bringing Amsterdam’s total to 16. Nationally, nearly 110 measles cases have been recorded. The RIVM has not declared an outbreak or epidemic, but has acknowledged four clusters at primary schools in Rotterdam, The Hague and EIndhoven, in addition to the Amsterdam school.
Health officials have launched an extensive contact tracing investigation and anticipate additional infections in the coming days. The affected neighborhood has a historically low vaccination rate, a factor contributing to the outbreak’s rapid spread.
“This outbreak is strongly linked to low vaccination rates in the area. We’ve seen a downward trend for years,” https://www.at5.nl/artikelen/231590/mazelen-basisschool-nieuw-west-16-kinderen-amsterdam - said Van der Weijden. “The school in question also had a low vaccination rate, allowing the virus to spread quickly.”
Of the cases in the Netherlands, at least 17 people contracted the virus in Morocco this year, and at least three others became infected while in Romania. Both countries have been grappling with wide-spread measles epidemics for some time.
“Several tens of thousands of people in Morocco have been infected with measles, and more than 100 people have passed away as a result,” the RIVM stated on Wednesday. The two countries were both mentioned in previous alerts from the RIVM, which was also concerned about people gathering in areas of https://nltimes.nl/2025/02/18/measles-outbreaks-hit-ski-resorts-check-vaccination-status-hitting-slopes - Austria and Germany for winter sport holidays.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through coughing, sneezing, and even talking. Symptoms typically begin with fever, cold-like symptoms, and red, irritated eyes before progressing to a rash that spreads from behind the ears across the body. The incubation period ranges from 7 to 18 days.
While most cases resolve on their own, measles can cause severe complications, particularly for babies, unvaccinated pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The GGD is urging parents to vaccinate their children and to contact their doctor if symptoms appear. “We strongly advocate for high vaccination rates to prevent outbreaks like this,” Van der Weijden emphasized. “If parents have concerns or religious objections, we encourage open conversations about the risks associated with measles.
DJ, other sources also indicate 9parts of) Asia having a major outbreak of measles...Since "measles" is not that "rare" it may take some time before the WHO calls it a global emergency ?
Decrease of vaccination may be part of the problem. CoViD immunity damage can explain why some other groups also see measles infection...In 1% of vaccinated persons the vaccine does NOT create the immune protection (to a protection level) it is supposed to create...

Till april 2 NL did see 209 reported cases of measles-most in children <10 y/o and unvaccinated. Several clusters in major cities-in part cases imported from Morocco.
Vaccination in orthodox christians is also "low"-measles R0-spread is high...so measles cases may expand from major urban centers to the NL "bibble belt" (Most likely in the Rotterdam area-there both groups live quite close to eachother-may mix at secondary schools in age group 12 y/o+).
https://ggdru.nl/thema/vaccinaties/vaccinatie-mazelen-voor-volwassenen/ - https://ggdru.nl/thema/vaccinaties/vaccinatie-mazelen-voor-volwassenen/ or https://ggdru.nl/thema/vaccinaties/vaccinatie-mazelen-voor-volwassenen/
When are you protected against measles?
If you have been vaccinated once or have had measles, you are protected.
Were you born before 1965? Then you do not need a vaccine. There is a good chance that you have had measles and you are protected against measles.
Were you born between 1965 and 1975? You are only protected if you know you have had measles .
Were you born after 1975? Then you were offered the measles vaccination in the National Vaccination Program. Check whether you have had it.
As a healthcare worker, you are protected if you have had measles or if you have had two vaccinations with at least 28 days in between.
How do you make an appointment for a measles vaccination?
If you are not protected, you can make an appointment. The vaccination costs money. The costs are 82 euros (32.50 euros for the consultation and 49.50 euros for the vaccine).
You cannot make an appointment if you are already protected (born before 1965, previously vaccinated, or had measles).
Read this before your appointment:
Are you pregnant or do you want to become pregnant? Contact us.
Do you have a weakened immune system due to illness or medication? Contact us.
Do you have a fever the day before your appointment? You cannot get a vaccination.
Are you having an operation under anesthesia within 2 weeks? You ca n't get a vaccination.
DJ, Most NL health insurances do cover the costs of a measles vaccination. (Very likely government may encourage people to get a vaccine if measles cases keep going up...It is "cost effective"-vaccinating people against measles is far cheaper then seeing them getting ill !).
IF measles starts showing up in groups supposed to have (natural/vaccine) immunity (60+ Y/o supposed to have had measles) then alarmbells should start ringing !
CoViD may have undermined immunity against measles...It could indicate further immunity damage...
---
Because of "the don of death-trump" tariffs war pharma trade (with the US) may become more expensive...So people in the US will see public healthcare further destroyed by the "trump-team"....
April 16 EU, China and Vietnam will meet in Hanoi to discuss a joined reaction on US insanity. China, India have a pharma capacity big enough to "vaccinate the world"....(without going for crazy profits). Maybe even NGO's could offer FREE measles vaccines in the US ?

DJ, US-Canada also see an increase of measles-cases...
https://nltimes.nl/2025/04/09/number-measles-cases-continues-rise-slower-rate-previous-weeks - https://nltimes.nl/2025/04/09/number-measles-cases-continues-rise-slower-rate-previous-weeks or https://nltimes.nl/2025/04/09/number-measles-cases-continues-rise-slower-rate-previous-weeks ;
The number of measles cases has continued to rise, but the increase is slowing down. A total of 42 new cases were registered in the last week, compared to https://nltimes.nl/2025/04/02/dutch-measles-clusters-growing-fast-cases-exceed-2024-just-three-months - 51 the week before and https://nltimes.nl/2025/03/26/dutch-measles-cases-jump-46-week-primary-school-clusters-spread - 50 a week earlier . However, it is still too early to speak of a leveling off, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
Since the beginning of the year, there have been 251 measles infections reported in throughout the country. This is more than for the whole of 2024. Last week marked the highest number of infections since 2013.
The clusters in five https://nltimes.nl/2025/03/19/measles-clusters-hit-primary-schools-amsterdam-rotterdam-hague-eindhoven - primary schools in https://nltimes.nl/2025/03/20/measles-outbreak-amsterdam-school-16-children-test-positive-4-hospitalized - Amsterdam , Rotterdam, The Hague, Almere, and https://nltimes.nl/2025/02/26/multiple-measles-reports-helmond-primary-school - Helmond are still prevalent. According to the RIVM, these are public, islamic, and anthroposophical schools where a relatively low number of students have been vaccinated. “There are multiple clusters at primary schools and within families. Most cases involve children under 10 years old,” the RIVM said in its update.
DJ, Morocco, Vietnam, Romania are also mentioned as having a high number of measles cases.
A lot of cases are seen in regions with low/no vaccinations. So-still in general- lots of clusters...with Texas-US very likely most close to a more general outbreak.
As far as I know vaccines/natural immunity still offers a decent/good job in protection against measles. There may be very limited spread in vaccinated groups. Part of the vaccinated may have been infected prior to vaccination (???).

What’s happening in your blood during measles?
The mechanism for increased death after measles is driven by two main things: a suppressed and dysfunctional immune response and the development of immune amnesia. These two outcomes are driven by multiple events that impact certain cell numbers, types and functions.
Initially, there is a measurable but temporary https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/1719187 - drop in total lymphocyte numbers ( https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/cdli.9.5.994-1003.2002 - lymphopaenia ). Some of the disappearance of these cells from the blood is likely due to them https://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0140-6736%2817%2931463-0 - moving into different body compartments – the lymph nodes in particular. Initial lymphopaenia depresses total lymphocyte numbers, then MeV-specific lymphocytes surge back and clear the virus. However, the https://journals.plos.org/plospathogens/article?id=10.1371/journal.ppat.1004482 - composition of the rest of the newly made and released lymphocytes is changed.
There is also a major impact related to which cells MeV infects, manipulates and destroys. You may have guessed already. MeV targets and kills the T and B cells that excel at rapidly responding to the return of many viral and bacterial nemeses from days gone by.
The loss of specific lymphocyte subsets that hold our immune memories can last https://science.sciencemag.org/content/348/6235/694 - two to three years, and it drives the observable increase in human deaths over this longer period, well after recovery from measles.
DJ, Good story...measles is now a major problem in several countries. Vaccination stops 95-96% of infections...Measles itself is highly infective-so you need widespread measles vaccination to stop its spread.

Two new cases of measles have been confirmed in Western Australia
The two cases visited several locations while infectious between April 6 and 11, including Bunbury Regional Hospital on five separate occasions.
Pennsylvania reports that someone from another state has tested positive for measles while visiting Lancaster County.
The unvaccinated individual was visiting following a trip to Texas.
They caught the illness while in Texas, and they were contagious between April 3-11.
Measles reported at daycare and Denny’s in Hobbs, New Mexico.
An unvaccinated child with measles was present at multiple public locations:
– Kidz City Daycare at Chooselife Church
– Denny’s on Lovington Highway
A single unvaccinated case can turn into dozens within days.
