DRC: Displaced people attacked by Monkeypox in Goma and Nyiragongo

Thursday, July 11, 2024 - 08:13

In North Kivu, displaced people fleeing fighting between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo and M23 rebels are suffering from monkeypox. These displaced people are living in makeshift sites in and around Goma, as well as in Nyiragongo territory.

During the period from June 24 to July 10, the province recorded 21 cases of Mpox spread across three health zones of Nyiragongo, Goma and Karisimbi. According to the provincial health director of North Kivu, most of the sick are displaced persons.

"The first case appeared in the city of Goma, in the indigenous population precisely in the health zone of Karisimbi, the other cases that followed the majority are among the displaced persons who are in the camps in Goma and in the territory of Nyiragongo.

These people live grouped together and they have many problems related to hygiene, nutrition and housing. This Mpox disease is extremely contagious and in these conditions we say that the province of North Kivu runs a great risk of a humanitarian catastrophe.

This is why it becomes a concern for the population as well as for those responsible for the health system who must put in place approaches, programs to respond to this disease," said to ACTUALITE CD Désiré Buyana, the coordinator of the national communication program for the promotion of health in North Kivu.

Mpox is an infectious virus that spreads rapidly. The Provincial Health Division is calling for help.

DJ, Very likely "fighters" also going for sexual violence further spreading Mpox. A lot of cases will be missed/ignored...(there may not be ANY medical care !)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goma or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goma ;
With an approximate area of 75.72 square kilometers, the city has an estimated population of nearly 2 million people according to the 2022 census,[5] while the 1984 estimate placed the number at 80,000.[6]
DJ, A lot of people will be refugees. The local economy may not be able to feed the population -certainly with war in the region...So aid-based local economy...

"Rich countries" rather provide waepons than solutions...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goma#Economy or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goma#Economy ;

Goma's economy relies mainly on agriculture, with a significant proportion of its population engaged in the trade of agricultural products. However, due to the instability of the local currency, economic transactions often involve foreign currencies.[107] Primarily centered on the production of raw materials, including agriculture, fishinghunting, and fish farming, these activities typically employ artisanal methods and antiquated production techniques

DJ, Mpox, like H5N1, CoViD getting worse...

Maniema: a death due to Mpox recorded in Lubutu

July 15, 2024

Lubutu, July 15, 2024 (ACP).- One death due to Mpox (monkey pox), out of nine suspected cases, has been recorded since the beginning of July 2024 in the health zone of Lubutu, Maniema province (in the center-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo), ACP learned Monday from a medical source.

"We confirm the presence of suspected cases of Mpox in the rural health zone of Lubutu. For this current month of July, we have recorded nine suspected cases of Mpox who are interned and monitored at the general reference hospital of Lubutu, among whom there was the death of a 30-year-old woman," declared Dr. Kaleba Kikukama, medical director of this medical training.

"These interned patients present the following clinical signs: high fever, skin rashes in the form of pustules and scabs, mainly affecting the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet, muscle pain, fever, headaches and others." These cases, he continued, come not only from the Lubutu center health zone, but also from neighboring health areas including the Mundo health area which records a high prevalence.

The medical director of the Lubutu general hospital also raised the problem of patient care.

" The hospital takes care of these patients, but there are difficulties in the supply of medicines and other necessary inputs to be used for this care. The patients are treated by external prescriptions ," he lamented.

In this regard, he called on the authorities to come to their aid, especially through support in the form of medication and services from the Ministry of Public Health, including the INRB, for confirmation of the diagnosis.

More than 47 suspected cases of Mpox were also recorded in June 2024 in the Katako health area, located 7 kilometers from Kindu in the Kailo rural health zone.

ACP/ODM

DJ, Lots of Mpox cases will NOT be reported in many countries...in part because of lack of medical care capacity...aloso "saving the economy/tourism"....

Just like CoViD and H5N1 is allowed to spread maybe the -crazy- idea of "herd immunity via natural infection" may play a role...

Contact with contaminated surfaces may play a larger role than "men having sex with other men" sensationalist "news"...

Pala: District Medical Officer Tries to Reassure Population Following Notification of Suspected Cases of Monkey Pox

by Tchadinfos | Jul 17, 2024 | Health , Chad | 0 comments

The chief medical officer of the Pala health district, Dr Gonodji Tebret, made a communication on July 16, 2024 at his office. A communication relating to three suspected cases of monkeypox notified on behalf of the province.

In Pala, the capital of Mayo-Kebbi West province, three suspected cases of monkeypox were reported. And in record time, the news spread throughout the city and created panic among the population of the city and its surroundings.

In his statement, the chief physician of the Pala health district, Dr. Gonodji Tebret, emphasizes that nothing has yet confirmed these three suspected cases recorded at the Pala hospital. According to him, these patients have been admitted to the Pala provincial hospital for a few days and have spots on their bodies in the form of chickenpox. He informs the population that samples have been taken and sent to N'Djamena for analysis and only the ministry could confirm these three cases in the province.

However, Dr Gonodji Tebret urges the population to be vigilant and to quickly go to a health facility in case of doubt.

DJ, More info on what variant of Mpox is spreading in Chad would be welcome. Another question is how it did reach that country (not bordering DRC/Congo) or in the same region. (in the south bordering Nigeria, Cameroon and Central African Republic).

Seeking safety, seeking sustenance

Since a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into civil war on April 15, 2023, the two sides have plunged the country into a devastating crisis.

Some 10 million people are displaced – the highest figure in the world – and famine-like conditions are taking hold across the country.

About 756,000 people are facing “catastrophic levels of hunger” with an additional 25.6 million people facing acute food shortages, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, the United Nations’ hunger-level scale.

As a result, people are moving, seeking physical safety and enough food to sustain life, and more than 600,000 have ended up in Chad, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Many are barely surviving, dependent on food aid from the World Food Programme (WFP).

Sudan is east of Chad.

The US, EU, Russia, China are among the lots of countries trying to get more control in Africa.

Mpox could end up in (South)Sudan...even move north to Egypt...

Mpox is mutating to become more contagious in Africa, alarming some health experts This year, there have been more than 11,000 cases reported, and 445 deaths, with children the most affected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Less than two weeks later, on July 11, the WHO reiterated that mpox remained a global health threat, with 26 countries reporting cases to the agency in July. This year, there have been more than 11,000 cases reported, and 445 deaths, with children the most affected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to WHO, South Africa has also recently reported 20 cases of mpox — including three deaths, the first cases reported in South Africa since 2022. WHO said all of the cases were men, and most self-identified as men who have sex with men. None had reported cases of international travel, which suggested that community transmission is ongoing.

DJ, my impression-most cases will be missed...lack of even basic care...

First Mpox case at Gauteng school reported in Hammanskraal
18 July 2024 - 11:25
Koena Mashale Journalist

The first case of Mpox at a Gauteng school was reported at a primary school in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria.

This was after a grade 1 pupil from Iketleng Primary School was diagnosed with the infectious disease after displaying the symptoms.

According to the Gauteng department of education, this was confirmed by the pupil's parents on Tuesday after taking the child to hospital.

Spokesperson Steve Mabona said the child visited relatives in Boplaas, Northern Cape, this past weekend, where it’s alleged some of the relatives were displaying symptoms of Mpox.

“Upon returning home, the learner reportedly had itchy sores and was taken to hospital on Monday where the diagnosis was reported as Mpox...,

Mpox outbreak remains under control, says Health
Thursday, July 18, 2024

The Department of Health has reassured South Africa that the current Monkeypox, or Mpox, disease outbreak remains under control.

This is despite several suspected cases reported across the country due to heightened awareness and surveillance activities, the department said on Thursday.

The Gauteng Department of Education retracted a statement this morning after it said a case of the infectious disease was reported at a Hammanskraal school in Gauteng.

The provincial department admitted that it may have “acted prematurely” in confirming the case without verification from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) and apologised for the confusion.

According to the Department of Health, there have been 22 positive cases reported since May of this year. This includes 16 recoveries, three deaths and three active cases...

In 2023 and 2024 (up to 30 June 2024), there have been a total of 239 cases of mpox reported in the UK. Of these, 225 were in England (98 cases were presumed to have acquired mpox in the UK, 74 were acquired outside the UK and 53 are awaiting classification), 9 were in Scotland (5 were imported cases acquired outside the UK, 3 were presumed to have acquired mpox in the UK and one is awaiting classification), one was in Wales (an imported case acquired outside the UK), and 4 were in Northern Ireland (one was presumed to have acquired mpox in the UK, one was an imported case acquired outside the UK and 2 are awaiting classification).

A lot of spread of -several types of-Mpox 9still) ongoing. Reported cases may go down-in most cases people may be ashamed to seek help.

A.o. in San Francisco-very likely more places-indications are Mpox again increasing...(And gay community only in part a cause).

DR Congo: Exponential rise in the number of monkeypox cases A government spokesperson said the cumulative number of suspected Mpox cases had hit 11,166, including 450 deaths, for a fatality rate of four percent.

KINSHASA: The Democratic Republic of Congo is suffering an “exponential rise” in the number of monkeypox cases, the government said Saturday.

Government spokesperson Patrick Muyaya said the cumulative number of suspected cases had hit 11,166, including 450 deaths, for a fatality rate of four percent.

He said a report by the country´s health ministry revealed “an exponential increase in the number of cases”.

Muyaya added that the western province of Equateur was worst affected. The report said the government was taking a series of measures to combat the disease, notably “medical care, monitoring of contacts with the respective health zones (and) promotion of community-based surveillance.”

The report came just days after the World Health Organization warned of the threat to global health posed by the “Mpox” disease amid concern of a potential epidemic outbreak of a new, more deadly strain of the virus in the DRC.

The latest outbreak shows “no sign of slowing down”, said WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He cited 11,000 reported cases and 445 deaths, with children worst affected.

Rosamund Lewis, specialist in monkey pox at the WHO, also warned of the risk of the virus crossing borders.

DJ, Lots of cases in Africa (and many other places) missed/not getting tested...

DRC: at least 11,000 cases and more than 400 deaths due to M.pox in 6 months

Published on Sun, 07/21/2024 - 11:39 | Modified on Sun, 07/21/2024 - 15:54

At least 11,164 cases and 447 deaths due to Monkey pox disease (M.pox) have been recorded since the beginning of 2024 in the DRC.

These figures provided by the Ministry of Public Health worry Doctor Jean-Jacques Mbungani, former Minister of Health.

This public health expert called on the Government on Saturday July 20 to take more action to limit the spread of this disease.

He is calling for Monkey Pox to be officially declared by the Government as a public health problem of international concern.

In this regard, according to him, there will be a greater focus on this epidemic from international organisations.

Dr Mbungani also mentions the proximity of the borders of Rwanda and Burundi which would favor the spread of this deadly disease:

“ We are on the border between Rwanda and Burundi. There are many cases reported in South Kivu, the Ministry of Health should monitor this closely to protect our populations .”

This doctor recommends that the Suminwa Government organize the response in collaboration with all health actors, in all mechanisms to slow the spread of M.Pox.

" We must make an effort to improve coordination and the mobilization of resources, in order to support the provinces with experts ," said Dr. Mbungani.

" But there are also efforts to be made to train these experts so that at the provincial level the care is efficient ," he added.

This former Minister of Health fears that because of the surge in Mpox cases, the DRC will be declared a "Country at risk of public health of international concern".

DJ, Belgium has a large population with links to (former Belgian colony) Congo. There are several types of Mpox (more than the "old" two from West- and Central Africa).

CoViD, measles can result in skin problems-Mpox may not show external skin issues...health care capacity WORLDWIDE is no longer able to deal with an increase of the mega-mix of diseases...

Wasting trillions on wars, NOT doing anything on climate collapse did bring us into a "new pandemic normal"....

Maybe as a reminder-untill 1900 life expectency was 40 years-more or less...People in richer countries did get older during the 20th century (better food, healthcare, sewage etc). That "peak humans" may be over...
