In this week’s Spotlight, we include the key findings from the recent Michigan-led study that tested the blood of farmworkers from two dairy farms that experienced an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus among cattle. The study looked for antibodies that would indicate infection with the virus. 

None of the blood samples collected from people who had been exposed to infected dairy cows showed H5N1 antibodies. This is an important finding because it suggests that asymptomatic infections in people are not occurring and provides support to the current testing approach – i.e., collecting samples from symptomatic people who have been exposed to sick animals.

DJ, So "twitter experts" (to put it that way) alarm about CDC NOT reacting to possible symptomatic H5N1 cases a.o. in Oregon. The CDC stating recent testing in Michigan farmworkers did NOT detect antibodies for H5N1 ? 

Maybe the level of testing is too small ? The wrong groups ? 

DJ-My view; 

A. Very likely H5N1 is spreading human-to-human in the US
B. The CDC or other US agency has to make such a "story" official
C. In this early stage it may not be that easy to "get a finger on it"...because H2H may still be limited. The farm workers most at risk may be illigal immigrants not willing to cooperate...

Stories of farmworkers getting infected while working with infected cattle (eye infection during milking a.o.) are several MONTHS old...Testing is on a voluntary basis...
