   In "western history" may 29 1453 the East(ern) Roman Empire with "Turks/Ottomans" taking over Constantinopel...Another way of looking at it may be Ottomans did continue the East Roman Empire under Ottoman/Turkish rule untill World War One. 
South East Europe/the Balkans were part of that Ottoman Empire but also North Africa, Middle East.

Are the Dutch Germans denying to be German ? Are Ukrainians in fact Russian speaking a dialect ? A "Jewish" identity can be seen as religious. Based on that religion children born from a Jewish mother are also Jewish.
