Introduction: Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is an enteropathogenic coronavirus that causes acute diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and even death in piglets, resulting in serious economic losses to the pork industry worldwide. PDCoV has received much attention owing to its broad host range, including humans, posing a potential threat to public health. However, the prevalence, characteristics, and host cellular gene expression of PDCoV remain poorly understood.

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), also referred to as coronavirus HKU15, is a member of the genus Deltacoronavirus of the family Coronaviridae (Kikuti et al., 2024). PDCoV causes diarrhea, dehydration, vomiting, and enteric damage in neonatal piglets, similar to those caused by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) (Bahoussi et al., 2022Yin et al., 2022). PDCoV was first reported in pigs in Hong Kong (Woo et al., 2012), and received significant attention after an outbreak in Ohio, United States in 2014 (Wang et al., 2014Shan et al., 2024). Interestingly, a previous study reported that the PDCoV (CHN/AH-2004) strain was isolated from Anhui Province, China, as early as 2004 (Dong et al., 2015). PDCoV has spread rapidly throughout the United States, China, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam, posing an enormous threat and economic loss to the commercial pork industry (Zhao et al., 2019Kong et al., 2022).

A Bayesian study of 138 genomes showed that the virus has six subtypes.[5] Groups 1 and 2 originated in North America and groups 3–5 originated in Asia. The evolution rate of the genome was estimated to be 3.38 × 10−4 substitutions/site/year similar to other RNA viruses. The most recent common ancestor of the extant strains evolved ~1943.

PED is transmitted by fecal-oral transmission and the infectious dose is low. Pre-weaned piglets shed large amounts of virus in their feces resulting in rapid spread and high mortality rates. Older animals do not shed as much virus in their feces as piglets. It can also be spread via contaminated fomites. A study showed that when aerosolized virus particles can spread up to 10 miles from the source of infection. [6]

A major disaster (earthquake, flooding)  does increase the risk of all kinds of animal diseases getting in contact with other hosts.
