US scaled down the seize of the VP-delegation planning to visit Greenland this week-and only the US base in the north of Greenland now is on the agenda.
DJ-From a PR point of view unloading all kinds of armoured cars/security from US planes-because of a "high level" but touristic US visit was planned may have looked to much like a US invasion... In a poll "85% of Greenland population" is against joining the US...Now that statistic has "limited value"....If joining the US would make everyone living at present in Greenland a multi-millionaire that number could change...Greenland is very rich...giving a share of that wealth to its citizens will have to be a basis for any talks... A complication is who to talk with Greenland and/or Denmark...foreign policy/defense is still a Danish "job"...mining, tourism is a Greenland/Nuuk job... --- https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ or https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ On the list of 233 countries (etc) by population Greenland is at # 207...The Faroe Islands, Bermuda (even) have a larger population... One could discuss Greenland borders. Should the Canadian Arctic (Archipelago) be included ? Or Svalbard ? Maybe even Iceland ? For now the idea is the 57,000 Greenlanders themselves decide on their future. And they want to go for an independent Greenland. Joining/leaving EU, NATO etc. is another part of an agenda... The US/trump interest is in mining and security. He may get "a lot" without greenland joining the US... A strategic part (also played when the US did buy Alaska 1867 from Russia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Purchase or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Purchase ) is if the US "has" Alaska AND Greenland it can increase pressure on Canada...(and the North Atlantic). To much confrontation over Greenland is further widening the gap between the US and "the rest of the west"...so the US/trump scaling down a bit may be wise...
