"The west" did invest much more into the UKraine war compared to Afghanistan (or even Vietnam-where it was the US, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea fighting "communism"-Vietnamese nationalism). 

Western backed jihadi crazies now "in power" in Syria has become just another phase in the western made "civil war" in Syria. Even the Syrians -and Türkiye- want Russia to be present in Syria to "limit USrael"...With USrael less then 10 kilometers away from a major Damascus Airport (South West of Damascus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus_International_Airport or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus_International_Airport is SE of Damascus). 

The west/NATO had to pull back from Afghanistan just a few years ago...NATO could not stop Yemen-Houthi attacks on ships/USrael. 

from that perspective "the west" is not only loosing the UKraine war...it is losing the global conflict against BRICS+...also in Africa, Latin America
