Faced with the increase in measles cases worldwide and the epidemic currently affecting Morocco, health authorities are asking health professionals to pay particular attention to patients traveling to a country where measles is circulating. The Regional Health Agency also recommends that users check their vaccination status and, if necessary, get vaccinated.

A resurgence in France and the region, with an ongoing epidemic in Morocco

In November 2024, the World Health Organization observed an increase in measles cases worldwide. Measles is circulating particularly in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.

In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, only one case was reported in 2021, compared to 73 in 2023 and 139 in 2024. Most of the clustered cases in the region originated from an unvaccinated traveler returning from a stay in a country affected by measles (Dubai, India, Romania, etc.).

17 cases have been reported in the region since the beginning of the year .

In recent months, an epidemic has been particularly raging in Morocco. However, since January 2025, French health authorities have observed a notable increase in the number of imported cases of measles from Morocco .

Measles, a disease to be taken seriously

Measles is a highly contagious disease: in the absence of preventive measures, one patient can infect up to 20 people.

It can lead to severe complications (respiratory, neurological) which may require hospitalization , leave after-effects , or even cause death .

Since the disease is transmitted through the air, adults, like children, can come into contact with the measles virus in many circumstances: at daycare, at school, at work, during indoor activities, in a waiting room, etc.

Given the resurgence of cases worldwide, certain destinations may also prove particularly risky.

Vaccination remains the best protection against severe forms

Vaccination is mandatory for children born since January 2018 : 1st injection at 12 months and 2nd injection at 16-18 months.
To be well protected against measles, everyone born since 1980 must have received 2 doses of vaccine.
Before 1980, measles was common in France: people born before this date therefore have a high probability of having contracted this disease and of being immune.
People born after 1980 and/or parents are therefore invited to check their vaccinations and those of their children , by identifying one of the vaccine names below in the vaccination record:
  1. Monovalent measles vaccine: Rouvax®
  2. Bivalent vaccine against measles + rubella: Rudi-Rouvax®
  3. Trivalent measles + mumps + rubella (MMR) vaccine:
    - ROR® / Trimovax® / ROR Vax® (marketed before 2028)
    - Priorix® / MMR Vax Pro® (marketed since 2018)
In the event of non-vaccination or incomplete vaccination , you should consult a doctor or pharmacist quickly, with your health record.

Recommendations for healthcare professionals

The Ministry of Health has alerted health professionals to this situation so that they can:
  1. Check the vaccination status of their patients.
  2. Apply the specific recommendations for patients planning to travel to a country where measles is circulating - or returning, namely the administration of a dose of MMR vaccine. It is recommended for:
  1. Infants from 6 months of age: these children will subsequently need to receive two doses of trivalent MMR vaccine according to the vaccination schedule (1 dose at 12 months of age, then one dose between 16 and 18 months)
  2. people born before 1980 who are not protected against measles : with no known history of measles or not previously vaccinated.
Measles is a notifiable disease , which requires special treatment as soon as it is suspected.

DJ, In most cases vaccinations may be better /lower risk then "getting the virus"...
