Earlier today, in L.A. County Public Health Confirms Measles Case, we looked at the recent imported case in Los Angeles, the ongoing outbreak in Texas, and discussed how serious measles infection can be; particularly in children.
I'll have a postscript after the break. Texas announces first death in measles outbreak As of Feb. 25, 124 cases of measles have been confirmed in the outbreak since late January. Most of the cases are in children. Eighteen people have been hospitalized over the course of the outbreak. - The WHO reports that the number of measles related deaths have fallen 80% over the past 25 years - and that vaccines have prevented 60 million related deaths. But even so, more than 100,000 people die from the infection every year, and many more suffer long-term sequelae. While not the scourge that is was during most of the 20th century, measles remains a serious public health threat in much of the world, and is only held at bay in developed countries by relatively high vaccination rates. A barrier that can be easily overcome if vaccination rates continue to fall. DJ, Again...the combination of diseases may make diognosis harder and result in more severe disease |
