DJ, The NetherLands-NL were neutral between 1815 and may 1940...the German invasion ended Dutch neutrality.
NL-in between the UK, France and Germany-had very good reasons to stay out of (others) conflicts; -The NL had their own conflicts (Belgium 1830/39 getting out of NL, Dutch East Indies colonial wars). -Rotterdam-port did "bloom" during World War One...lots of indirect international trade went via "neutral NL"... -"We"-the Dutch- have had enough wars before 1795-French/Napoleon invasion...Wars with stronger neighbours...It may have been in NL interest to see the UK-France-and Germany/Prusia being in a sort of conflict with each other... -Napoleon did see NL as the "residue of French rivers", the German kaiser did see NL as being "German in denial"....Both Germany and France did take small portions of NL but would NOT allow the other to get to much...The UK wanted a "balance of power in Europe"...

Neutral countries can build bridges. Can help "partners in conflict with eachother" to find a way out...
For that matter Switzerland, Austria now do have a major role to play. It is very welcome also the Vatican does see a role... In lots of conflicts finding an "exit strategy" is a major problem. In my view the major conflict now is BRICS+ ending 500 years of western domination. ---------------- A main reason why "the west" could "rule the world" was military superiority. That is now over... Russia intervened in Syria to keep its ally Assad in power. It moved into Ukraine to stop NATO expanding further east-with US (nuclear) weapons/bases close to Russia. The western idea was it would be "easy/doable" to control Russia via both sanctions and military action. Even to the surprise of Russia this turned out to be incorrect. In 2014 the EU went for sanctions against Russia. Russia did increase production of sanctioned goods themselves and import from non-EU countries like Türkiye, India, China. After the start of the Russian "Special Military Operation/SMO" in 2022 the "west" went "full sanctions" against Russia....only to find out Russia itself is "to big to sanction" and Russia could do deals with other countries also under western sanctions... So...the west may have learned "peak sanctions" do exist. |

The US led "west"-10% of the global population, finds itself increasingly in conflicts with the 90% "global rest"-more and more organizing in BRICS+ .
After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 the US did see itself as "the only superpower" and went for an "uni-polar world"...US making the rules...Of course western-Russian conflicts go back further in time... Russia has three allies; seize, time and winter...Even in 1917 -with Russia accepting a peace deal with the "Central powers" (Germany) in World War One, followed by western intervention in the revolutionary war till 1923, Russia simply turned out to be too big a country to fully control. So-based on history-the NATO-west would be wise to seek some sort of agreement with Russia/BRICS+...NOT conflict. To put things very simple-I love that-"the west" has been fighting the Vikings/Russians for over a 1,000 years...

In "western history" may 29 1453 the East(ern) Roman Empire with "Turks/Ottomans" taking over Constantinopel...Another way of looking at it may be Ottomans did continue the East Roman Empire under Ottoman/Turkish rule untill World War One.

DJ, In the above posts I wanted to underline present conflicts in Ukraine/Middle East have roots going back over more then a 1.000 years...One can claim the "Irish" conflict, Scotland seeking independence goes back to the invasion of Anglo-Saxon(and Frisians) of Britannia when the West(ern) Roman Empire ended...
In history wars and pandemics did "mix very well". A lot of massive pandemics did see a reason for becoming a pandemic in wars... So-since we do not want to learn a thing from history-go for a 2 dimensional world- ("here" and "now" stupidity) we "refresh" old conflicts in new wars ! CoViD is not over-getting 5 years old....Flu is around the corner, with lots of other diseases using lack of immunity as a result of over 4 billion people getting CoViD at least once... We are wasting trillions of $/£/€ in crazy wars...money needed for health care...But we are defunding healthcare and science...

So...it can get a lot worse ! Even without becoming a nuclear "World War Three" (or if you include 1618-1648, 1795-1815 global wars-World War Five)...we may see a lot of escalations...
In UKraine daily UKraine "fighters" (untrained -so NOT a soldier !) killed/badly wounded may be over 2,000. USrael is killing hundreds of Palestinians per day in Gaza/West bank... Both wars are NATO proxy wars...with NATO losing both... --------- How to get out of it ? US "POTUS" Obama did see Russia had "escalation dominance" in UKraine...VPOTUS-joe biden-however went for family investments in UKraine, Afghanistan...in many ways Europe is in a US (made) war... The US most likely did blow up the Nordstream German-Russian pipelines...so the EU had to buy US energy...Weakening the EU-getting the US stronger...(was the idea). Europe-the EU-has to BREAK with the US ! European interests and US (UK) interests no longer are the same... zelenski/netanyahu stay in power because of US support...Europe ends up paying a very high price for keeping the US #1/saving the US$.... Russia is NOT against Ukraine joining the EU...however for now Ukraine is bankrupt...another burden for the EU...The US is pushing the EU to "start talks" with UKraine...further destroying Europe... Who needs an enemy if "the US is your friend" ? (Or in kissingers words; “It may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal.”) Russia GDP-PPP now did become larger than that of both Germany and Japan... The Dutch -via Nieuw Nederland/Nieuw Amsterdam- may have played a major role in US "Yankee" (my view "Janneke" -British nickname for the Dutch living in US colony before 1776 US)history. But we have to get out of these escalations of over a 1.000 year old conflicts !
