The Meteorological Agency on Thursday issued its first-ever alert warning about a possible megaquake around the Nankai Trough, following a magnitude 7.1 quake that struck earlier in the day off the coast of Kyushu.

It is believed that the chance of a major earthquake occurring in the Nankai Trough is relatively higher than usual, according to the agency, but it added that this does not mean an earthquake will necessarily occur within a specific timeframe. The warning is expected to be in place for a week, but officials said residents should not let their guard down even after it is lifted.

that earthquakes with a magnitude larger than 8 can be considered as megaquakes.

DJ, my question; Will the 7.1 Japan quake be an indicator for a "megaquake" in a wider (West)Pacific region ? May it indicate increased risks for Indonesia, New Zealand or maybe even the Pacific coast of "the Americas"??? Are there any volcanic links ?

Time may tell...good the best experts try to provide an alert and advice. Cabinets, cupboards may be safer if they are fastened to walls...Safe places in/around houses can be prepared-with water/food/communication in place...It may save lives, also just by making people aware of risks...

DJ, location just north of Japan, east of Sachalin...Does it affect quake risks for (East) Pacific ? Relative strong deep quake...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nankai_Trough or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nankai_Trough ;

The Nankai Trough (南海トラフNankai Torafu, Southern Sea Trough) is a submarine trough located south of the Nankaidō region of Japan's island of Honshu, extending approximately 900 km (559 mi) offshore. The underlying fault, the Nankai megathrust, is the source of the devastating Nankai megathrust earthquakes, while the trough itself is potentially a major source of hydrocarbon fuel, in the form of methane clathrate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nankai_megathrust_earthquakes or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nankai_megathrust_earthquakes ;

The fault is divided into five segments in three zones, which rupture separately or in combination, and depending on location, the resulting earthquakes are subdivided by zone from west to east into Nankai earthquakesTōnankai earthquakes, and Tōkai earthquakes.

The earthquakes occur with a return period of about 90–200 years, and often occur in pairs, where a rupture along one part of the fault is followed by a rupture elsewhere on the fault, notably the 1854 Ansei-Tōkai earthquake and the 1854 Ansei-Nankai earthquake the next day, and the 1944 Tōnankai earthquake, followed by the 1946 Nankaidō earthquake. In one recorded case (the 1707 Hōei earthquake) the fault ruptured along its entire length. All of these great earthquakes have resulted in damaging tsunamis, which are particularly damaging due to the Japanese population being concentrated on the Taiheiyō Belt, especially the coastal cities of TokyoYokohama and Osaka, the three most populous cities in Japan. The area remains seismically active, and future earthquakes are anticipated, with a high risk of a Nankai earthquake in the near future, which could be potentially very damaging.

DJ, The https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_T%C5%8Dhoku_earthquake_and_tsunami or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_T%C5%8Dhoku_earthquake_and_tsunami (M9.1) was not linked to the Nankai-fault line..

Like pandemics earthquakes -to a certain level- are known risks. How one deals with known risks can limit damages/deaths...

Japan has lifted it warning for a higher than usual risk of a major earthquake one week after a strong tremor on the edge of the Nankai Trough seabed zone caused the government to issue its first “megaquake” advisory.

Citizens can now return to normal life after no abnormalities were observed in seismic activity in the past week at the Nankai Trough, located along Japan’s Pacific coast, Yoshifumi Matsumura, the state minister for disaster management, said on Thursday.

On August 8, the Japan Meteorological Agency released an advisory that there was a “relatively higher chance” of a Nankai Trough “megaquake” as powerful as magnitude 9 after a magnitude 7.1 quake hit the country’s southwest.

While the advisory was not a definitive prediction, the government asked residents of western and central regions to review evacuation procedures in case of a severe earthquake and tsunami.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida cancelled a visit to Central Asia and Mongolia over the weekend to prioritise disaster management.

The alert that such a catastrophe might hit the archipelago of 125 million people prompted thousands of Japanese to cancel holidays and stock up on essentials, emptying shelves in some stores.

Matsumura cautioned that lifting the warning didn’t mean the risk of a major earthquake has been eliminated.

DJ, Of course population density concentrated in urban areas makes risks for Japan quite high...
