I saw this mentioned yesterday and here it is again today with a new flu like illness reported in the Congo. 376 people have sickened with it and 143 have died. |

DJ-WHO team may arrive in the area soon. Since basic medical infrastructure may be missing it will take time to find out what is happening... It even may be another system of administration now picks up deaths missed before...so "no new flu" but people dying from "flu-like disease" that were not included in earlier statistics... From CoViD to H5N1/H5-H7 flu-types...lots of possible causes...maybe even "mixed". Some extra CoViD-deaths, TB/HIV-AIDS linked, flu...resulting in a high statistic "news story".... Basic problem is keeping countries poor, denying basic healthcare to billions of people because of "neo-liberal market dogmatism"-stupidity... I try to follow this story in "new pandemic"...But I will NOT be surprised if there is "no further news"-no findings...

Translation Google “Unknown” disease, dozens dead: four questions on a troubling situation in the DRC The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on "maximum alert", has put forward several explanatory hypotheses, while the WHO has sent a team to the site to analyse samples. By Nicolas Berrod December 5 , 2024 at 2:48 p.m. Five years after the emergence of Covid , a new “unknown virus” could cause trouble in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) . Hundreds of people have fallen ill, dozens of them have died. The situation is nevertheless very different and does not inspire the same concern on a global scale, although it intrigues scientists. "We are on maximum alert," stressed this Thursday the Minister of Public Health of the DRC, Samuel Roger Kamba Mulamba, during a press conference. We take stock. 1. What happened? In late November, the government of the central African country was warned that many people were suffering from symptoms resembling severe flu syndrome (high fever, headache, runny nose, anemia, etc.) in a remote area of the country called Panzi. This area has " 71% of children suffering from malnutrition , one of the highest rates in the country," the Minister of Health said. 40% of the sick are children. 2. What is the exact death toll? It is still uncertain, but it amounts to several dozen deaths minimum. "An unknown public health event" detected since October 24 has "already caused the death of 27 people out of a total of 382 people affected", according to the National Institute of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Prevention, in a report dated Tuesday evening. But in a press release published on its Facebook page on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the DRC Ministry of Public Health mentioned a much higher number, namely 79 deaths among 376 patients. And the day before, Tuesday, local authorities had indicated to the Reuters agency that the toll had risen to... 143 deaths! Minister Samuel Roger Kamba Mulamba gave details this Thursday. 27 people died of this same disorder in hospital, including 10 due to a lack of transfusion, and 44 succumbed in other places. That is 71 in total, provided that the death is really still linked to this disease. 3. What are the possible hypotheses? There are many. It could be a cluster of an already known disease, such as Ebola , hemorrhagic fever or virulent flu. The hypothesis of a less severe disease, such as Covid, seems unlikely due to the very high mortality rate. But it is not ruled out, as the population is generally in poor health and therefore more at risk of serious illness. The possibility of a new virus is not excluded either. In any case, "we can talk about a respiratory disease, because people die of severe respiratory distress," says Minister Samuel Roger Kamba Mulamba. The mystery is all the more difficult to solve since "the DRC is one of the poorest countries on the planet but also one of the hottest spots for epidemic emergence," says epidemiologist Antoine Flahault. It has been the most affected by mpox (ex-monkeypox) for a year, for example. Due to a lack of resources (screening, prevention, etc.) and without a developed health system, it is complicated or even impossible to quickly identify the pathogen in question. 4. What are health authorities doing? A doctor, three epidemiologists, a laboratory manager and several experts were dispatched to the scene as soon as the alert was received at the end of November, indicated Samuel Roger Kamba Mulamba. As access was difficult, they took two days to arrive. A first consolidated assessment was therefore announced on Tuesday, December 3. The World Health Organization told us on Thursday that it had sent a team to the site "to collect samples for laboratory analysis." When asked when the results might be available, the agency was unable to respond. The DRC government expects them by the end of the week. - Unknown disease in Kwango: death toll rises from 70 to 130 Published on Thu, 05/12/2024 - 05:11 | Modified on Thu, 05/12/2024 - 05:16 The number of people who have died from an as yet unidentified disease in the Panzi health zone in Kwango has risen from around sixty to around one hundred in a matter of days. According to the provincial Minister of Health, Apollinaire Yumba Tiabakwau, nearly 382 people presenting symptoms of this disease are registered in seven of the thirty health areas in this zone: "What we had reported from November 10 to 25 was 67 deaths. Now, when the team went down yesterday, along the way, they found in a village where the medical team and civil society reported at least 20 deaths. And in another village that was not counted in the same period, they found at least 40 deaths, plus the 4 that were added today. Which makes 131 deaths as of today . " This team of epidemiology experts was dispatched by the provincial government to Panzi to try to determine the nature of the disease and attempt to provide treatment. " They are still on the ground in Panzi. "Concretely, they are taking samples (to be sent to INERB), raising awareness to limit the migratory movement of the population, teaching the population about barrier measures. They have given a batch of medicines that MP Jonathan Bialusuka Wata sent ," said Dr Apollinaire Yumba. According to him, the National Ministry of Health has announced the dispatch of another team to the site to join and reinforce the one already on site for the care of the sick. "The active cases are there." DJ, So...population in area very poor, lots of healthissues...a virus can give the last push... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwango or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwango population 2,6 million...even on wikipedia very limited info...

DJ, Lots of "stories/claims" on the very remote DRC/Angola border area disease outbreak-but still "no news"...
https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2024/12/who-don-undiagnosed-disease-democratic.html https://afludiary.blogspot.com/2024/12/who-don-undiagnosed-disease-democratic.html ; We have a lengthy report this afternoon from the WHO on the (still) undiagnosed disease outbreak in the DRC. It was hoped that we'd have results this weekend, but it is the rainy season, and this is happening in a remote and poorly accessible region of the country, making access difficult. For now, WHO is working to determine the cause - or causes - of this outbreak, and has declared the risk to the affected communities as high, while at a national level it is moderate. For now, they state: Given the clinical presentation and symptoms reported, and a number of associated deaths, acute pneumonia, influenza, COVID-19, measles and malaria are being considered as potential causal factors with malnutrition as a contributing factor. We've been following this closely for several days and will obviously continue to do so. - The majority of cases reported are among children, particularly those under five years of age. The area is rural and remote, with access further hindered by the ongoing rainy season. Reaching it from Kinshasa by road takes an estimated 48 hours. These challenges, coupled with limited diagnostics in the region, have delayed the identification of the underlying cause. DJ, Again-it may be an outbreak of a mix of diseases in combination with "statistics"- maybe indicating a high number of deaths that may have been missed before... If "answers were easy we would have an answer by now"....The longer it takes-very likely-the more "complex" the story may be...Number of cases may NOT represent people with all the same symptoms...So even that part of the story is a ???? The total lack of healthcare facilities in some parts of the globe, people living in extreme poverty, is a major underlying problem linked to "rich countries keeping the rest poor"...

Malaria control measures are very limited.” DJ, One could claim the "new disease" in fact is poverty... https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/africa/emerging-diseases-other-health-threats-ah/1001427-drc-kwango-at-least-31-confirmed-deaths-due-to-an-epidemic-of-unknown-origin-reported-in-panzi-november-30-2024?view=stream or https://flutrackers.com/forum/forum/africa/emerging-diseases-other-health-threats-ah/1001427-drc-kwango-at-least-31-confirmed-deaths-due-to-an-epidemic-of-unknown-origin-reported-in-panzi-november-30-2024?view=stream ; 64%. Maybe they got bad samples or maybe they haven't been able to get the samples to a lab yet. I feel that we'd have gotten announcements even if nothing was detected, because they're going to test for Ebola and Marburg (and DRC is very good at detecting those) and get negative results because this doesn't look anything like those outbreaks, which they'll announce to try to reduce the fear, even if they don't have any positives. In terms of what you bring to fight this outbreak without diagnosis, I'd assume we're talking things like antibiotics, vitamins, perhaps anti-malarials, maybe measles or flu vaccines if that's suspect. DJ, The basic-socio-economic-problem; keeping billions of people poor to keep 0,1% "claiming they own the planet"....In many ways one may claim socio-economic inequality NEVER was this bad in all of human history...

Unknown disease in Panzi: a delegation from the Ministry of Health and its partners are staying in Kwango to improve the health situation
A delegation from the Ministry of Health and its partners including the World Health Organization, arrived Sunday in Kenge, the capital of Kwango province. It met with the provincial authority on Sunday to discuss strategies to identify the still unknown disease that is raging in the Panzi health zone, in the Kasongo-Lunda territory. Patient care and the eradication of this disease were examined with a fine-tooth comb. Head of this delegation, Masoko Matthias explained that she should urgently go to Panzi to improve the health situation...... "It is first to identify the phenomenon and to be able to name it. As there was the alert with many deaths, we went with a first batch of emergency medicines of more than two tons for the population of Panzi. We are going there for three major challenges, to identify the phenomenon on site, to react or minimize the loss of human life and to coordinate the interventions around the Ministry of Health", indicated Dr Luc Shabongo, WHO representative. ... - < aria-expanded="false" aria-haspopup="menu" aria-label="More" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" -testid="caret" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;"> It has been 10 days since the "mystery outbreak" in the Democratic Republic of Congo was discovered and 4 days since samples were obtained for testing, according to the Ministry of Health.

"[...] it's possible that more than one disease is involved. Further samples will be collected and tested to determine the exact cause or causes." DJ, Some expected maybe H7N9-flu could be a factor...so far no evidence... Very likely the sudden increase in deaths is a combination of factors. -better statistics...There may not even have been a basic administration on births and deaths... -Mal-nutrition/starvation... -Malaria must have been an "old factor" not the "new killer"... Possible an increase of deaths because people did catch that many infections/diseases for that long the body simply gives up... DJ-Keeping 0,1% "owning the planet" with over a billion people dealing with less than 1 doctor per 100,000+ of the population is not only criminal it is also (again) asking for pandemics... DJ-my view; The "disease" "X" spread may be going on for close to two months...Malaria was detected in some cases, (acute) CoViD ruled out...If a type of flu could explain "disease X" for PR-reasons it would have been used... So my view is by now there is NO new disease...general health may be that bad people died from a mix of "old" diseases... It underlines the WHO, ACDC, UN fail to provide even basic healthcare for over a billion people...Another unwelcome political story...Neo-liberalism -only profits matter- killing millions of people... DJ, Civilization is a right to healthcare, education, housing, transport, food&water for all...Not only for a rich enough group...Maybe the ongoing global conflict is between extreme blind capitalism-NATO and "the rest of the world"... Creating crises to create profits is self-destructive...
