Australia: Nearly $10 billion lost in economic productivity due to long COVID in 2022 In September 2022 about 1.3 million Australians were living with long COVID, and of that number

DJ, 1,3 million Australians with Long CoViD....https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/australia-population/ or https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/australia-population/ Australia population 26,75 million...so around 5% of the Australia population has Long CoViD...

From the ABC story;
It found during September 2022 about 1.3 million Australians were living with long COVID and of that number about 55,000 were children aged four and under.

DJ...so 1,3 million long CoViD cases is from september 2022.....

DJ-It is crazy to focus on "economic damage" to get government action to stop a pandemic !

DJ-Cortisol may be a factor in lots of post viral syndromes (including ME-CFS/Chronic Fatigue Immunity Deficiency Syndrome...CF-IDS)

Some (studies/experts) claim (in some cases ???) immunity damage may look like HIV...
DJ-We are only a few years in this CoViD crisis...so long term damage may still show up...

DJ-Again-I am NOT any kind of expert-trying to get some basic idea; The CoViD pandemic never went away ...and may be much worse then a flu-pandemic because of the long term damage...

< aria-expanded="false" aria-haspopup="menu" aria-label="More" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" -testid="caret" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;">

DJ, Very likely to be the global picture; no testing=no cases=denialism...Because (my view) the crisis is much too large...Other diseases will spread on top of CoViD resulting in multi-disease pandemic(s)....

Non-Pharma Intervention-again-can limit damage !

-Ventilation
-Masks/eyeprotection
-Limiting social contacts....

DJ and of course good hygiene matters...but washing your hands will NOT end the pandemics !

Governments have to make public health priority #1...still "saving the economy=profits"...

DJ, CoViD in waste water in many places going high...Long CoViD in children resulting in different symptoms-may even matter per age...

< aria-expanded="false" aria-haspopup="menu" aria-label="More" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" -testid="caret" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;">
“For kids, however, it’s another story. New research, published Aug. 21 in JAMA, finds that Long COVID symptoms can look different among children compared to adults—and even among kids of different age groups.” https://time.com/7013025/long-covid-symptoms-kids/

link https://time.com/7013025/long-covid-symptoms-kids/ or https://time.com/7013025/long-covid-symptoms-kids/ ; further link to https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2822770 or https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2822770 ;

In models adjusted for sex and race and ethnicity, 14 symptoms in both school-age children and adolescents were more common in those with SARS-CoV-2 infection history compared with those without infection history, with 4 additional symptoms in school-age children only and 3 in adolescents only.

These symptoms affected almost every organ system. Combinations of symptoms most associated with infection history were identified to form a PASC research index for each age group; these indices correlated with poorer overall health and quality of life. The index emphasizes neurocognitive, pain, and gastrointestinal symptoms in school-age children but change or loss in smell or taste, pain, and fatigue/malaise–related symptoms in adolescents. Clustering analyses identified 4 PASC symptom phenotypes in school-age children and 3 in adolescents.

DJ; The JAMA study is science...any serious doctor has to work on the basis of science...

The scale of damage "living with the virus/saving the economy" has done to human health is "beyond extreme"...CoViD very likely opened the doors to all kinds of other diseases...

Still "those in positions" keep denying the damage-push for war...

DJ-Like climate collapse also in CoViD IN TIME !!!! action could have avoided the present crisis...The "political class" very likely know they did mess up...They messed up on such a scale we may not survive...So they now go for war as distraction...making matters even worse...

ICYMI #LongCovid is a defining crisis of our time Long Covid affects at least 400 million people globally with an economic cost of $1 trillion/yr Addressing Long Covid requires a coordinated—but so far absent—response strategy Our review
DJ, Some indications daily new CoViD cases may be 1 million+...A (very likely optimistic) estimate goes for 4 billion human CoViD cases so far since 2019...

Long CoViD and less immunity opening the door for lots of other diseases (the 2022 Mpox doing crazy things, H5N1) ...The spread of CoViD in non-human hosts is ignored-while it may be part of keeping the pandemic getting worse...

That slide compares an XBB.1.5 vaccine with a JN.1 vaccine. A KP.2 shot isn't even pictured. The relevant slide is this one, which shows that a KP.2 vaccine has 3.3-fold higher neutralization titers against KP.3 (likely the dominant variant by August). The choice is clear.
DJ...so in most of Europe we will get the (older-but in stock) JN.1 vaccine...

DJ-A lot of countries face CoViD problems;

< aria-expanded="false" aria-haspopup="menu" aria-label="More" role="" ="-175oi2r r-1777fci r-bt1l66 r-bztko3 r-lrvibr r-1loqt21 r-1ny4l3l" -testid="caret" ="" style="text-align: inherit; font-size: inherit; font-family: inherit; align-items: stretch; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; border-color: black; display: flex; flex-basis: auto; flex-direction: column; flex-shrink: 0; list-style: none; margin: 0px; min-height: 20px; min-width: 0px; padding: 0px; : relative; : 0; overflow: ; justify-: center; cursor: pointer; outline-style: none; user-: none;">
How many people in the U.S. have been infected this wave? 24.3% (about 1 in 4) so far if counting from the trough of May 2. 19.3% (about 1 in 5) so far if counting from entering ‘wave territory’ of 500,000 daily infections on Jun 23. How many will be infected? Since we’re about halfway through the wave, one could assume the total wave impact will be about double the current estimate (38-48%). From ‘wave entry’ to the trough between the summer and winter waves, I’d estimate 39.7% infected. However, some modelers would estimate lower, and some higher. In my view, it would be reasonable to say that an estimated 1/3 to 1/2 of Americans get infected this wave, acknowledging uncertainty across models. Of course, “your future hasn’t been written yet. No one’s has.” If the CDC held a press conference with well-fitting N95s and spent 3 minutes explaining wastewater surveillance, many infections could be avoided. A quite negligible impact of a CDC press conference would still mean 1 million fewer infections. Moreover, families can substantially reduce risk through multi-layered mitigation. Vax up when available. Use serial testing when symptomatic, exposed, for gatherings, or for purposes of asymptomatic surveillance. Wear a well-fitting high-quality mask (N95, KN95, KF94, elastomeric). When someone is sick, use the strictest criteria of the CDC and FDA of requiring 3 negative rapid tests on separate days before ending isolation. Hold meetings virtually and outdoors. Increase indoor air quality by keeping the HVAC 'on' (not 'auto') and using HEPA and DIY air purifiers. Donate masks, tests, and air purifiers to those in your community. Set house rules for precautions, and stick to them. 1/2 to 2/3 of people in the U.S. will NOT get infected this wave, and that might as well be you. These statistics are based on the PMC Model (http://pmc19.com/data) and underlying model assumptions noted in the Technical Appendix. I would also recommend checking out the World Health Network's new model, which is a hair more pessimistic than PMC's in terms of recent case estimates (https://whn.global/estimation-of-infections-based-on-wastewater-data-us/).

PMC COVID-19 Forecasting Model, August 26, 2024 🧵1/8 We're in uncharted territory during the back-to-school period. 1.2 million people in the U.S. are getting infected per day. 1 in 41 people (2.5%) are actively infectious.

DJ, Vaccines may limit damage after catching CoViD...If the present wave would get 100 million US citizens infected (an OPTIMISTIC !!! scenario)  and 10% would get long term health issues this wave would result in TEN MILLION more US Long CoViD cases...

No doubt "economic damage" runs in the billions per year-however most of the costs ends up with those getting infected...increasing poverty...(because the poor suffer much more risks !).

Above CoViD lots of other diseases are increasing...Maybe when the labor-"market" crashes "politics" may "react"...DJ-The "migration discussion" in many countries could be linked...Replacing long CoViD workers with migrant workers-untill they also get infected/ill...

Politics-for-sale working for a donor-class is self destructive...

Lots of talk about the XEC variant lately. It's a fast variant, but I want to emphasize two things. First, I don't think XEC is much faster than the dominant KP.3.1.1. Germany is the only country w/enough seqs for a reliable growth estimate & it's pretty modest & uncertain. 1/6
-
A variant w/such a small growth advantage (assuming it's accurate) takes months to grow to dominance. And such modest advantages do not result in any noticeable change in case levels, so I don't expect XEC to have any real impact. By the time it would become dominant... 2/6
-
...it's almost certain that some other, more dramatic evolutionary event will have taken place, whether that be another chronic-infection-derived saltation variant or simply further stepwise spike mutations on top of current variants. 3/6
-
2nd important point: XEC's spike is nearly identical to KP.3.1.1's spike, so there's no real concern about immune escape here. There are only 2 differences: #1. KP.3.1.1 has ∆S31 & XEC has T22N. But both introduce glycans & have near identical effects on growth. 4/6
-
#2. XEC has F59S, which KP.3.1.1 lacks. This is the most likely source of XEC's slight growth advantage over KP.3.1.1, but it's not in an antigenically important region & has never been a major factor in any previous variant. Meanwhile, they share 63 AA spike mutations.
-
In summary, I see XEC as a notable and important variant but not one likely to have a major real-world impact. Others feel differently, and I could be wrong. We probably won't know for several weeks yet. 6/6

DJ, part of the problem may be in lack of testing=lack of sequences...

DJ, the basic sort of CoViD testing is virus-parts in sewagewater...However here also high levels may not mean a lot of people catch (symptomatic) CoViD...

https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/excess-mortality-p-scores-average-baseline?time=2023-12-31..2024-07-21&country=USA~GBR~NLD~FRA~DEU~SWE  or https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/excess-mortality-p-scores-average-baseline?time=2023-12-31..2024-07-21&country=USA~GBR~NLD~FRA~DEU~SWE

NL still -in 2024- has higher excess deaths than a lot of other western countries. Only France and Germany had lower than average "normal" deaths for a few times...NL excess deaths in between +10 to +20%....Does Sweden simply not report excess deaths ?

"CoviD is over" because "it is no longer in the news"....Do not test-do not tell-stupidity...
A lot of CoViD deaths are "hidden" in statistics for hearth/kidney/brain(stroke) deaths...

Excess deaths also include heatwave deaths...only NW Europe did NOT have a heatwave this summer !

What the XEC! Recombinant #SARSCoV2 lineage #XEC (recombinant of KS.1.1/KP.3.3) has the potential to outcompete other circulating lineages in #USA (and other countries) More data is needed to provide a reliable growth advantage estimates

So far this year, more than 4.9 million COVID cases have been reported in the U.S., causing at least 348,034 hospitalizations (partial data) and 38,563 deaths.

DJ, One reason why the number of CoViD deaths is put between 7 and 35 million is " indirect" CoViD deaths. People dying from all kinds of damage AFTER a CoViD infection...

The real number of CoViD deaths very likely could be even higher-if one looks at excess deaths...

The real problem is criminal governments "saving the economy" by denying pandemics, climate collapse, debts...only push for wars...

🆕"Molecular Diagnosis of COVID-19 Sudden and Unexplained Deaths: The Insidious Face of the Pandemic" 23 autopsies. In all cases the SARS-CoV-2 was the cause of death. Results indicate that they had COVID-19 with persistent or chronic viral infection. https://mdpi.com/2075-4418/13/18/2980

DJ, "criminal politicians" may defund "unwelcome science"...It reminds me of nazi-germany...We CAN NOT repeat that kind of insanity !

If humans want to survive they have to solve problems-not deny them...The 19th century idea of PUBLIC health did help to limit diseases...The neo-liberal "privatize everything crime" is destroying public health, climate...at the end this planet...

US: Hospitals required to report Covid-19, flu and RSV data from November 1st Expiry of Federal requirement in April "resulted in voluntary data reporting, which led to reduced visibility."

link; https://www.cdc.gov/ncird/whats-new/updated-hospital-reporting-requirements-for-respiratory-viruses.html  or https://www.cdc.gov/ncird/whats-new/updated-hospital-reporting-requirements-for-respiratory-viruses.html ;

What to know

  • On April 30, 2024, some federal reporting requirements for hospitals and critical access hospitals expired as specified in the regulations at that time. This resulted in voluntary data reporting, which led to reduced visibility.
    • The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a new rule requiring hospitals and critical access hospitals (CAHs) to report information about COVID-19, influenza, and RSV starting November 1, 2024.
      • Through the National Healthcare Safety Network, CDC will work with hospitals to provide training and technical assistance to ensure they are ready and able to meet these updated reporting requirements this fall.

DJ, Good there will be more reporting-however if there is no mandatory testing it still has limited use...

DJ, Brasil 66-Mas que nada...great song...Long CoViD by now will be killing more people than CoViD does-however people die "from complications"...excess deaths an indirect indicator...

Covid-19 was presented as a one and done infection, that ‘only’ killed the vulnerable, that didn’t harm kids, that was spread by droplets not air. That vaccines would prevent. Now NONE of the above are true, we are floundering in denial with no plan. Covid is not over.

DJ, One of many -bad policy- outcomes is CoViD is now "under the radar"...very likely still getting a lot of people around the globe ill...From hearth/brain issues to "old style" lung problems...Since the "politicians" that went for "living with/dying from CoViD" in general still are in power-and now promote war-"policies" will go for more denial/cover-ups...

      Replying to and
I had such high hopes when Labour won the election - particularly with people like in ministerial positions. He has made powerful statements in the past about the importance of tackling Covid & Long Covid. It’s so disappointing that there’s been no sign of action yet.

DJ, To get out of pandemics/climate collapse-mix we need to "change the system"....Uni-parties defend the rich donors AGAINST public interests...

      https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/turkish-researchers-warn-about-cancer-causing-risk-of-covid-19  or https://www.thailandmedical.news/news/turkish-researchers-warn-about-cancer-causing-risk-of-covid-19

DJ-CoViD is NOT !!!! some sort of "short term flu" !!!!!!

CoViD is an often chronic healthrisk. Clots may do damage all over the body...
The corona-virus may hide in organs of human/other animal hosts...

Very likely a main reason Mpox clade 2b became a global problem since 2022 may be CoViD linked...Mpox, H5N1 are among the many diseases increasing because of the damage CoViD does to immunity....

Non-sterilizing vaccines may limit symptoms but do NOT stop spread and further evolution of CoViD...New variants evade immunity....

"Old politics" is kicking cans down the road...buying time...Has no idea of even the problems let alone solutions...

We urgently need a better political system restoring a balance between humans and nature...Information is part of the way out of the crises...

Limiting damage that is "backed in" has to be another part of a strategy...Worldwide over 400 million people may be dealing with "Long CoViD"...a disaster of unimaginable proportions...Denial = poverty for most Long CoViD patients...

We need global answers NOT global exploitation -via NATO terrorism- in the interest of the 0,1% claiming to "own" over 50% of the planet...

Pandemics/climate collapse are an outcome of democrazy turned into democrazy...
